Serene and content this old grandmother wiles away the hours stitching the white needle lace known as "Pipilla". She is sitting outside the gates of the garden entrance to her home in the village of Omodhos. During spring and early summer the cobbled and picturesque narrow streets come ablaze with color from potted flowers on the ground, the balconies and windowsills. Omodhos, lying on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains has retained its old traditional character where many of the houses have been renovated and restored, reflecting life as it was a few centuries ago. The villagers welcome which are furnished in the old style. An inquisitive explorer would soon find the 15th century wine press, now restored to its magnificent old self and classed as an ancient relic. Omodhos after all is the largest of the wine producing villages and commands spectacular views of vineyards as far as the eye can see. In the middle of the village stands the famous monastery of the Holy Cross where two donor icons dated 1528 A.D. and c.1570 A.D., the earlier being decorated with gold embroidery, make one wonder at the devotion of those people who lived so long ago. In the 17th century large quantities of tobacco were grown in Omodhos and exported to Egypt and Syria. By 1878 when Britain took over the administration of Cyprus, the tobacco industry just like the cotton and other industries had ceased to flourish due to the heavy taxes imposed during the Ottoman occupation
