Aircraft and Ship, EUROPA Issue Post and Communications, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Prior to the 15th century, mail communications in Cyprus, just as in Europe, were not organised but depended on individuals and merchants who needed to establish trade links. Cyprus being an island depended on ships’ captains to carry mail abroad. From the 17th century on wards, the ruling dynasties of Europe needed to maintain control over their dominions, and so created the Royal Posts. In Britain, the post is still known as the Royal Mail. In those early centuries the mail couriers rode on horseback, as speed of delivery was essential. They were known as Postillions. In the 19th century horse-drawn carriages were introduced, and Cyprus moved with the times. In 1878 Britain introduced the first properly organised postal service in Cyprus which still operates on the very same foundations to this day.
During the early years postmen delivered mail on bicycles. Today they use scooters. In due course mail vans were introduced for the collection and delivery of mail from and to outlying post offices. As air travel increased after the 1950 s the forwarding of mail by ships declined very fast. The internet revolution and the instant facility available for e-mail communication will eventually reduce drastically the demand for postal services as we know them today.
