Title
Ayia Napa Monastery, 6th Pictorial Definitive Issue of the Republic of Cyprus , Republic of Cyprus
Description
The monastery of Ayia Napa, dedicated to our Lady of the Forests, is situated in what is now a very lively touristic town. Built in the 16th century it has elements of Lusignan and Venetian construction. Originally it belonged to the Latins whose church had a chapel dug out of a grotto in the rock. The place served as a nunnery during Venetian rule. In the center of the courtyard is a superb octagonal fountain, covered by a large dome supported by four open arches between which are raised stone seats where travelers in earlier times could rest and refresh themselves. The aqueduct carrying water to the monastery is probably of Roman construction although many repairs have been carried out. Just outside the entrance to the monastery is an ancient sycamore tree believed to be over 600 years old. After the Ottoman conquest of the island the monastery was given to the Greek Church by Lala Mustapha Pasha.
