Just as in previous Games, the Seoul Olympics experienced boycotts from North Korea who was very upset at not being considered a co -host, and then followed by Ethiopia and Cuba. In fact approximately 8,500 athletes par ticipated, representing 159 countries. A new rule allowed tennis to retur n to the Olympic Games after an absence of 64 years when it was eliminated because of professional/ amateur difficulties. Drug tests resulted in the banishment of several athletes from the Olympic G ames, while ten others including B en Johnson champion of the 100 meters race were disqualified for using steroids and per for mance enhancing drugs. The outstanding personalities of these Games were East Ger many ’s Kristin Otto who won six gold medals in the swimming events, and Florence Griffith Joyner of the United States who attracted attention by her speed and flamboyant outfits.
