Title

The Bazaar, Larnaca, Steel Engravings of Larnaca and Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus, Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία

Description

In 1878 when the Br itish Forces landed at Larnaca, this was the sea-front café that probably became a popular meeting place for those men and officers who were off- duty. The harbour and the seaside promenade with its dozens of cafes today and century old palm trees towering over its skyline are located in that part of larnaca known as ""Scala"". With Britain taking over the administration of the island, Cyprus emerged from its isolation and desolation under Ottoman rule, and during the latter part of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th, Scala experienced and influx of Europeans.Travellers eager to discover the magic of the Orient or explore new lands would make a stop at Larnaca on their way to the Holy Land and surrounding countries. Others came looking for the new opportunities for trade.
Scala where all the consulates were located was the center of commercial life. It was here on the sea-front that in 1860 the Imperial Ottoman Bank first opened its doors. With its foreign diplomats, chancellors and a significant European community Scala enjoyed a cosmopolitan and very active social life. Consuls and society ladies often entertained and sumptuous dinners and Commandaria the favourite local dessert wine, were served.
