Dublin Core

Title

Miniature Illumination of St. Mark (11th Century), Christmas Issue Illuminated Gospels, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The illustrations for this Christmas set derive from the Eptakomi (a small village in the Famagusta district) Gospel which appears from cer tain language form to have been written in the 12th century. Originally it contained four Gospels but unfortunately many parts are missing
including the illuminations of St. Matthew and St. John. The 4c. and 20c. stamps are the miniature illuminations of St. Mark and St. Luke while the 13c. stamp depicts the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Mark . The surviving texts of the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. John are incomplete.
