Title
Larnaca - Nicosia Mail Coach 1878, Centenary of the Universal Postal Union, Republic of Cyprus
Description
In the 18th and 19th centuries postal/ passenger horse drawn coaches were in use all over Europe. In Switzerland the coaches traversed the Alps on roads built by Napoleon while in England they operated for 62 years from 1784 to 1846 when they were superseded by the railways. The coaches had a right of way on the roads and the guards used to blow their horns (these are now symbols of post offices)
to warn road users to keep out of their way, or to announce their arrival at a coach inn. Travellers glamourised this era of leisurely though at times bumpy travel. The mail guards and coachmen wore elegant and distinctive uniforms and were often handsomely paid by rich merchants and noblemen or noblewomen for the safe delivery of their letters or packages.
