Submarine Cable Links, International Communications Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) was established in 1961 to provide national and international telecommunications within the Republic of Cyprus. For its international operations it adopted the name CytaGlobal, and to create a bridge between East and West, it developed an extensive underwater fiber-optic cable network connecting Cyprus with its neighbours Syria, Lebanon, Egypt,
Israel and also Greece and Italy. In a world that has been moving faster and faster with every passing year, the advent of wireless mobile telephony, the satellite and Internet revolutions have all created a demand for instant global communications. To meet this challenge CYTA developed an impressive satellite network infrastructure and undertook to be an Internet Service Provider (IPS) with connectivity to foreign IPSs as well. In the field of cable networks it participates with international consortiums to operate in foreign countries. CytaGlobal already operates a cable network in the Black Sea. New innovations in telecommunications such as digital television to peoples’ homes without the need for satellite or cable, or the possibility of sending ana receiving e-mails via television will require CYTA to be constantly at the forefront of this global information revolution.
