Betty Ford, First Lady of the Unites States, addressing the International Women's Year Conference on 25th October 1975, believed that the best way to celebrate the year was to examine the very real problems women face today and not the progress of yesterday. While many opportunities were open to women, too many were available only to the lucky few. The contributions of women as wives and mothers continue to be underrated she said, and the restrictions spring directly from those emotional ideas about what women can and should do. These definitions of behaviour and ability inhibit men and women alike and the limits on women have been formalized into law and structured into social custom. Change in its nature is very threatening, but it is also productive. Changing laws, creating more job opportunities and less financial discrimination are in themselves insufficient to change the place of women, because women must value their own talents before they can expect acceptance from others. In trying to open up new opportunities and choices women must not underestimate their accomplishment in the home. We have to take the "Just" out of "Just a housewife" she said, and show pride in having made the home and family one's life work. The downgrading of this work has been part of the pattern in society that has undervalued women's talents in all areas. She concluded by saying: "Let us work to end the laws and remove the labels that limit the imagination and options of men and women alike. Much has been done
