Portrait, Archbishop Makarios III Memorial Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
Archbishop Makarios III (1913-1977) was born in Ano Panayia, Paphos on 13th October 1913. At the age of thirteen he entered the Monastery of Kykko as a novice. He studied at the Pancyprian Gymnasium and later continued his studies in Athens and Boston. He was ordained Priest in 1946, elected Bishop of Kitium in 1948 and Archbishop in 1950. He revived the role of ""Ethnarch"" (from Ottoman Times) which combined his role both as Head of the Church and political leader of his people. He was an accomplished orator with a charismatic personality. He was arrested by the British authorities and exiled to the Seyhelles in 1956, one year after the start of the liberation struggle (1955). He returned from exile in 1959 and was elected President of the newly Independent Republic of Cyprus. In 1974, a short-lived coup removed him from power but provoked the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey. On his death, the posts of Archbishop and Head of State were separated.
