Title
Saint Neophytos Supported by Two Guardian Angels, 2nd International Congress of Cypriot Studies, Republic of Cyprus
Description
St. Neophytos, born at Lefkara in 1134, founded the monastery bearing his name in the low cliffs near Paphos, towards the end of the 12th century. The original cavehermitage which the Saint named his "Enkleistra"" (seclusion), with the adjoining cave chapel of the Holy Cross are the most important parts of the monastery. The three consecutive caves namely the nave, the sanctuary and the cell are completely painted. The 100m stamp depicts the wall painting in the sanctuary of St. Neophytos supported by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel who hold him by the shoulders. The tall figure of Neophytos is clad in his monastic habit and above his head is recorded the motive of the unique composition ""I fervently pray that I may be indeed enrolled among the angels by virtue of my habit".(Extract from: The Painted Churches of Cyprus.)
