Title
Silver Tetradrachm of Ptolemy VIII, 118-117 B.C., Ancient Coins of Cyprus Thematic Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. Cyprus fell to the share of Ptolemy I who was a Macedonian general in the army of Alexander. The Ptolomies ruled Cyprus until the Romans annexed the island in 58 B.C. on the grounds that they were the heirs to the last legitimate Ptolemy and that the population had conspired in piracy. The silver, 4 drachma coin depicted on the 60 m. stamp is that of Ptolemy VIII monarch of Egypt and thus ruler of Cyprus from 116-108 B.C. and again from 88-80 B.C. The coin was struck in the mint at Paphos and shows: Obverse: Portrait of Ptolemy I Reverse: Eagle standing on winged thunderbolt (in the field is the mint mark of the city.)
