This 18th century stone built and imposing mansion, located within Nicosia’s Venetian walls, and now a museum in its own right, was the residence of Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios the well known Dragoman of Cyprus. He was appointed to this office by the Sultan and served from 1779/80 to 1809. Visitors to Nicosia wishing to exper ience a life of opulence of the late 18th and early 19th centuries should make a point of visiting this museum which remained in par t, the residence of descendants of the Dragoman until the middle of the 20th century.The wooden balcony (also known as a kiosk) above the main entrance was most probably where the ladies of the house sat and watched life go by. In the court yard are pointed arches forming an impressive colonnade, a marble fountain and the remnants of what must have been a rich garden. A separate building houses the Turkish bath with its interconnecting rooms. The apartments are spacious and the official reception room richly decorated in Ottoman style has a painted and gilded carved ceiling, which exudes oriental magnificence and which was carved by a skilled craftsman of Cyprus.In 1935 the mansion was declared an ancient monument and came under the jurisdiction of the Department of Antiquities.
