Description
The Messaoria is the eastern region of the very fertile Central Plain that stretches from Morphou bay in the west to Famagusta bay in the east.
Wheat and barley are the main crops grown in this plain. Around 1800 the customhouse records reveal that in an abundant harvest between 200,000 and 250,000 kilos (of Constantinople) were exported to Europe and Turkey at prices from 2ó to 3 piastres per kilo. As for barley a good harvest would yield between 300,000 and 350,000 kilos again exported to Europe and Turkey at an average price of 35 to 40 paras per kilo (1 piastre = 40 paras).
