Title

Harvest, Campaign Against Hunger Commemorative Issue, Republic of Cyprus

Description

For centuries the economy of Cyprus was based on agriculture and wheat was cultivated in abundance and exported to Europe and Turkey. Dennis Possot, a priest who came here in 1533 wrote: "There is good wheat whereof is made bread which is sweet and wonderfully good". (Excerpta Cypria p.63) William Turner, visiting the island in 1815 was told that after supplying its own population, Cyprus could furnish enough corn to load sixty or seventy vessels. He noted that a good harvest could yield between 200,000 and 250,000 kilos of Constantinople (Winchester bushel).
(Excerpta Cypria pp.426 & 431) In 1958 wheat output amounted to 3,008,912 bushels, which could satisfy between half and two thirds of the island's needs. By 2001 however, the local production of wheat could cover only nine percent of the local needs. Wheat production amounted to 8,356 metric tons while imports stood at 90,750 metric tons. The imports were from Greece, Denmark,Belgium, U.S.A. and Canada.
