Description

In 1989, a high-ranking officer from the United States visited the Allied Forces High Command Headquarters in Europe. His purpose was to meet and exchange views with European officers regarding the course of the European Union in order to complete his thesis at Harvard University. The head of the relevant department, an incredulous Briton, considered it appropriate, after an initial discussion with him, to refer him to someone who was actually pro the European Union. He then escorted and introduced him to a senior Greek Officer. After exchanging friendly pleasantries, the American Officer came straight to the point. Europe in the past, he said, had made many efforts to unite; all ended in failure, so what is it that makes you believe that this time it will succeed. The reply was so simple that it took the American Officer by surprise. Because this time Europe, said the Greek Officer, has come such a long way that there is no turning back. It can be compared to a couple wanting to get married, but not yet married, standing outside the church with their bestmen. It is difficult to turn back. The years have rolled and Europe has moved on; soon ten more countries will join and later more will follow including many that were once part of the Eastern block. Who could have believed then that Europe would come so far. One can be sure there is no turning back.
