Title
Children’s Centre, Kyrenia, International Red Cross Centenary Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The Cyprus Red Cross was founded in 1950 as a branch of the British Red Cross. From the start the Society was set up on a pan-Cyprian basis with its headquarters at Nicosia. Branches were also established in all the major towns. In 1957, the Society’s Home for Sick Children was established in Kyrenia. The home provided nursing and professional care for children of families with limited means and suffering from physical disabilities. In 1967, the Government’s Red Cross Law created the independent Cyprus Red Cross Society, which became a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. In 1973, the Society’s Youth Section was founded. After the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus in July 1974, the Home for Sick Children was relocated from Kyrenia to Limassol and representative branches for Kyrenia and Famagusta were transferred to Nicosia and Larnaca respectively. Today, the Cyprus Red Cross has about 8,000 members, comprised of persons representing every community on the island: Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Maronites, and foreign nationals living in Cyprus. The Red Cross continues, nearly 25 years later, to assist refugees and enclaved persons whose lives were uprooted by the events of 1974.
