  • Collection: The Antikythera Mechanism - The elliptical movement of the Moon and its simulation by the Mechanism

The construction and operation of a geared analogue computer is presented. The Antikythera Mechanism is the first analogue geared computer in human history.

The three largest fragments of the Antikythera Mechanism as they have been recovered from the sea by sponge divers in the early 20th century.
The largest fragment is the fragment A. 27 gears were detected inside that fragment.

For each assembly step of a model, a functionality test is conducted. One such test is presented in the specific video.

Dr. Marianna Efstathiou, member of the academic team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which investigates the Antikythera Mechanism, describes the modus operandi of the Mechanism.

The video demonstrates the way the user could use the Antikythera Mechanismin.

The text describes how the Antikythera Mechanism simulates the movements of the system Moon-Earth-Sun (i.e. the elliptical orbit of the Moon around the Earth)

Τhe components of the Mechanism include two protective-cover doors and their engraved inscriptions, gears, shafts and axes.
