It was re-built after 1570 and adapted as a khan. In the middle is a vast courtyard surrounded by rooms on the ground and upper floors. The upper rooms were used for guests while the rooms on the ground floor were used as shops or stores. After 1878 and until 1893 it was used as a prison. Until the 1950s one could still see traders driving their camels into the courtyard. In 1963 it was classified as an ancient monument, to be restored as a museum of Turkish and Islamic Art. Hadjiavantis was so scared that he blamed Karaghiozis for the delay because from morning till night he was telling jokes and the labourers were laughing instead of working. The Pasha was angered and had Karaghiozis killed. The unjust killing however traumatized the people. The Pasha having overcome his anger built a beautiful memorial for Karaghiozis and showered him with honours. But this episode cost the Pasha dearly and he fell seriously ill. Hadjiavantis often visited the Pasha to recount him the jokes of Karaghiozis to cheer him up, but it was to no avail. One day Hadjiavantis cut out a figure in the shape of Karaghiozis, stretched it on a canvas, lit it up and made the figure to move and tell jokes causing Karaghiozis to give his first performance. The Pasha was so pleased that he permitted Hadjiavantis to give performances to the people that they too may enjoy the jokes of Karaghiozis. Built as a fortress and never taken by assault it is one of the most ancient monuments in Cyprus and has the most colourful of histories. In 1191, it was surrendered to Guy de Lusignan who then took into custody the wife and daughter of Emperor Isaac Comnenos. In later years it served as a residence and a place of refuge and intrigue for the kings and queens of Cyprus. Here also in 1394 A.D. King Hugh IV imprisoned his two sons. Within its walls, down a dark passage, is the tiny chapel of St. George to which reference was made in the will of a certain lady Piemadabena of Ferrara who donated five bezants that mass should be said for her soul here. St. Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea had his name associated with carols, the gifts and the vassilopitta (type of cake), which the faithful share on New Year's Day when they celebrate his name day.It is well to refer to the amazing story of the Saint. Saint Basil was accustomed to share gifts and charity to the poor everywhere. The poorest places were to be found in the nearby desert where people had built their houses in the ground to be cooler, while others had built them to withstand attacks from other races. It possesses one of three surviving icons ascribed to Saint Luke. It is covered in silver gilt, enclosed in a shrine of tortoise shell and mother of-pearl, and stands in front of the iconostasis. The museum is an integral part of the monastery and houses a priceless collection of icons, consecrated vessels, manuscripts and Cypriot antiquities. The first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III served as a novice here. At his wish, he was buried at Throni, a scenic location 3 km west of the monastery. Annual religious fairs (panigiria) are held at Kykko on 15 August and 8 September.
