Αριστερά αναγνωρίζεται η Δέσπω και δεξιά η Αστέρω Μενοίκου. Σ΄ αυτή την τρυφερή ηλικία η Δέσπω Μενοίκου παρακολουθούσε μαθήματα Αγγλικών, πιάνου για έξι χρόνια και μπαλέτου για δύο χρόνια στο Λύκειο Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου. Το Λύκειο Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου ήταν ένα μουσικό σχολείο, το οποίο δρύθηκε το 1930 από την Μαρία Π. Ιωάννου. Η Δέσπω θυμάται «Κάθε χρόνο ερχόταν από την Ελλάδα εξεταστής, ο κύριος Αρβανιτάκης, ο οποίος μας εξέταζε στο πιάνο. Μου έδινε βαθμολογία πάντα άριστα και φυσικά με το σχετικό δίπλωμα». ΄Οσον αφορά το μπαλέτο θυμάται «Στο τέλος κάθε χρονιάς γινόταν μια μουσική εκδήλωση στην οποία παρευρίσκονταν οι μαθητές με τα μουσικά τους όργανα καθώς και οι κοπέλες που παρακολουθούσαν μαθήματα μπαλέτου και παρουσίαζαν πρόγραμμα ως μπαλαρίνες. Επίσης μέσα από τις παιδικές τους αναμνήσεις, η Αστέρω και η Δέσπω θυμούνται μια χρονιά σε εκδήλωση μεταμφιεσμένων, στο Λύκειο Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου, η Αστέρω ντύθηκε κοκκινοσκουφίτσα και η Δέσπω ντύθηκε Σπανιόλα. Η Αστέρω θυμάται: «Μου είπε η μητέρα μου όταν έρθει η σειρά σου να παρουσιαστείς στην σκηνή να πεις ‘είμαι η κοκκινοσκουφίτσα’. «Εγώ από τον φόβο μου το επαναλάμβανα συνεχώς μέσα μου για να μην τα χάσω εκείνη την στιγμή. Όταν ήρθε η ώρα βγήκα στην σκηνή και το είπα».

Αριστερά αναγνωρίζεται η Δέσπω και δεξιά η Αστέρω Μενοίκου. Η φωτογραφία λήφθηκε στο Φωτογραφείο Βασιλείου στην Αμμόχωστο αλλά η πρωτότυπη χάθηκε κατα την Τουρκική εισβολή του 1974. Το συγκεκριμένο αντίγραφο διασώθηκε διότι βρισκόταν στα χέρια του θείου τους (αδελφού του πατέρα τους) ο οποίος διέμενε στις ΗΠΑ. Η Δέσπω επισκέφθηκε τους δύο θείους της σε ένα ταξίδι της στην Αμερική με τον σύζυγο της και πήρε από τον ένα θείο τις παιδικές φωτογραφίες. Όταν η Δέσπω έδωσε στην Αστέρω αυτές τις φωτογραφίες, αυτή άρχισε να κλαίει. Η αδελφή της τότε την ρώτησε γιατί κλαίει. Και εκείνη της απάντησε "επειδή δεν ξέρω πώς ήμουν ως παιδί". Τα κατέστρεψαν όλα οι Τούρκοι. Δεν πήρε τίποτε η οικογένεια όταν εγκατέλειψε το σπίτι της το 1974. Μόνο τα κοσμήματα τους, όλα τα άλλα τα άφησαν πίσω. Όταν το 1990 η Αστέρω πήγε στο σπίτι της στην Αμμόχωστο με την δημοσιογραφική της ιδιότητα, το πρώτο πράγμα που ζήτησε από την Τουρκοκύπρια που διέμενε σ΄ αυτό ήταν αν βρήκε οποιεσδήποτε φωτογραφίες ή ζωγραφικούς πίνακες της μητέρας της. Εκείνη τότε της απάντησε ότι το σπίτι άλλαξε και άλλους ενοίκους και δεν βρήκε τίποτε δικό τους. Μόνο το πιάνο της αδελφής της Δέσπως το οποίο <δώρισε> σε σχολείο στα κατεχόμενα. Εδώ η Αστέρω είναι 4 χρονών.

The photograph was taken at the Vasiliou photography studio in Famagusta but the original one has been lost during the Turkish invasion in Cyprus. The specific copy of the photo was rescued because relatives of Astero in USA had it in their photographic archive.

Η τελωνειακή ταυτότητα του Σιακαλλή Μενοίκου, με τον αριθμό 131, ως τελωνειακού λειτουργού της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Εκδόθηκε το 1973-ένα χρόνο πριν την Tουρκική εισβολή. Η τελωνειακή ταυτότητα διασώθηκε γιατί ο πατέρας της Αστέρως και Δέσπως Μενοίκου την είχε στο πορτοφόλι του όταν έγινε η Tουρκική εισβολή. Ο Σιακαλλής Μενοίκου σπούδασε σε ιδιωτική σχολή και την τότε εποχή ήταν από τους λίγους που γνώριζαν άπταιστα την Αγγλική γλώσσα. Αφού έδωσε κυβερνητικές εξετάσεις προσελήφθη στο Τελωνείο Αμμοχώστου. Η μητέρα της Αστέρως θυμάται: "Στην Αμμόχωστο εργαζόταν στο Τελωνείο του λιμανιού Αμμοχώστου. Η στολή και το πηλίκιο που φορούσαν είχαν λευκό χρώμα". Θυμάται επίσης ότι "όλες στην γειτονιά ήταν ερωτευμένες μαζί του". Η σύζυγός του, Νίκη Σιακαλλή, θυμάται ακόμα: "Ήταν από τους πρώτους που είχαν δικό τους αυτοκίνητο". Την τότε εποχή ελάχιστοι είχαν δικό τους αυτοκίνητο. Στην φωτογραφία πρέπει να είναι γύρω στα 45 του χρόνια. Μετά την Τουρκική εισβολή μετατέθηκε στο παλιό αεροδρόμιο Λάρνακας, όπου ήταν υπεύθυνος για την αποθήκη του Τελωνείου. Ο Σιακαλλής πέραν της μόρφωσής του, ήταν ένας πολύ κοινωνικός άνθρωπος όπως και η σύζυγος του. ΄Ηταν πολύ καλός χορευτής. Γνώριζε όλα τα είδη ξένων χορών όπως βάλς κλπ, άλλους χορούς της εποχής του καθώς και Κυπριακούς χορούς. Επίσης ήταν πολύ καλός κολυμβητής. ΄Ενα από τα προτερήματα που είχε- εκτός από την καλοσύνη του- είναι ότι συναναστρεφόταν και με τον πιο απλό άνθρωπο και δεν έκανε διακρίσεις. Επίσης βοηθούσε οικονομικά και με οποιονδήποτε άλλο τρόπο μπορούσε όποιον ζητούσε την βοήθεια του.

An account of the resource
<p><strong>The Antikythera Mechanism</strong> is the oldest existing complex geared device, an amazing <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47379"><strong>geared analogue computer</strong></a>. It was built approximately 2150 years ago and was used to calculate astronomical phenomena.</p>
<p>The device was operated manually by a user, to set a date on a dial and notice the astronomical phenomena that occur on that day. Respectively, by choosing an astronomical phenomenon he can observe at which date it will happen. All necessary calculations were made using a set of gears (at least 39).</p>
<p>The Mechanism was used to calculate the diurnal and annual motion of the Sun, the Moon and probably the planets among the stars. It calculated the position of the Sun and the Moon on the Sky and the phases of the Moon for every day of the year and predict eclipses of the Sun and the Moon.</p>
<p>It implemented the astronomical knowledge of ancient Greeks about the motion of these heavenly bodies with astonishing accuracy, considering the <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47380"><strong>anomalous motion of the Moon</strong></a> around the Earth, using a <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47382"><span><strong>system of eccentric gears</strong></span></a>.</p>
<p>Essentially, in the Antikythera Mechanism, the epicyclic theory of Hipparchus is integrated. This theory was formulated to interpret the retrograde motions of the planets as well as the change in the angular velocity of the rotation of the moon around the Earth. Today we know that the moon's anomalous motion is due to its elliptical orbit as it turned around the Earth (Kepler's laws). It could, also, predict <strong><a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47381"><span>eclipses of the Sun and the Moon</span></a>.</strong></p>
<p>In addition, the Mechanism calculated the celebration date of the ancient Panhellenic Games. On the circumference of a corresponding dial found on the fragments of the Mechanism, the words Olympia, Pythia, Isthmia, Nemea and Naa have been deciphered. Internally, in each quadrant, the four years of the Olympic cycle are indicated. All these games were crowned Games, with winners being rewarded with olive wreaths.</p>
<p>The Antikythera Mechanism was a complicated instrument. Therefore, it is not surprising that it was accompanied by an extensive User’s Manual. New inscriptions that had not been read for more than 2000 years were revealed, mainly with the X-ray micro-focusing tomography. About 3500 letters and symbols have been deciphered up to now.</p>
<p><br /><strong>The collection is dedicated to Ioannis Seiradakis, whose contribution was a catalyst for the inception of the research for the Antikythera Mechanism, in 2005, which led to its decoding.</strong></p>

Seiradakis</a></span> (5 March 1948 – 3 May 2020)<br /></strong><br />Ο <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/collections/show/479"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων</strong></span></a> είναι η παλαιότερη σύνθετη μηχανολογική διάταξη οδοντωτών τροχών (γραναζιών) που έχει βρεθεί ως σήμερα. Κατασκευάστηκε πριν από περίπου 2150 χρόνια και είναι ουσιαστικά ένας αναλογικός <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47379"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>υπολογιστής με γρανάζια</strong></span></a>, ο οποίος υπολόγιζε αστρονομικά φαινόμενα. Η συσκευή λειτουργούσε χειροκίνητα. Ο χρήστης μπορούσε να επιλέξει μια ημερομηνία από τις κλίμακες των ενδείξεων και να δει τα αστρονομικά φαινόμενα που θα συνέβαιναν εκείνη την ημέρα ή αντίστροφα, δηλ. να επιλέξει ένα αστρονομικό φαινόμενο και να δει σε ποια ημερομηνία θα συμβεί. Όλοι οι απαραίτητοι υπολογισμοί πρόεκυπταν μέσω της διαδοχικής σύζευξης οδοντωτών τροχών (τουλάχιστον 39). Ο Μηχανισμός χρησίμευε για τον υπολογισμό της ημερήσιας και της ετήσιας κίνησης του Ήλιου, της Σελήνης και πιθανώς των πλανητών ανάμεσα στους αστέρες. Υπολόγιζε τη θέση του Ήλιου και της Σελήνης στον ουρανό και προσδιόριζε τις φάσεις της Σελήνης για κάθε ημέρα του χρόνου. Περιείχε τις αστρονομικές γνώσεις των Αρχαίων Ελλήνων σχετικά με την κίνηση αυτών των ουράνιων σωμάτων με εκπληκτική ακρίβεια λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47380"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ανώμαλη τροχιά της Σελήνης γύρω από τη Γη</span></strong> </a>μέσω της χρήσης ενός <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47341">συστήματος έκκεντρων οδοντωτών τροχών</a></strong></span> (<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47341">Η ανώμαλη κίνηση της Σελήνης και η προσομοίωσή της από τον Μηχανισμό</a></strong></span>). Στον Μηχανισμό των Αντικυθήρων, ουσιαστικά, είναι ενσωματωμένη η θεωρία των επικύκλων του Ιππάρχου. Η θεωρία αυτή διατυπώθηκε για να ερμηνεύσει τις ανάδρομες κινήσεις των πλανητών καθώς και την αλλαγή της γωνιακής ταχύτητας της περιστροφής της Σελήνης γύρω από τη Γη. Τέλος, ο Μηχανισμός περιείχε και ένα εκτεταμένο εγχειρίδιο χρήσης.<br /><br /><a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47655"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Βιβλιογραφία</strong></span></a><br /><br />Το 2005 συστάθηκε μια <a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/collections/show/485"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>διεπιστημονική ομάδα στο Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης</strong></span></a>, η οποία διερευνά τον Μηχανισμό των Αντικυθήρων. Η ομάδα αρχικά αποτελούνταν απο τον Ιωάννη Σειραδάκη, Καθηγητή Αστρονομίας, τον Κυριάκο Ευσταθίου, Καθηγητή Μηχανολογίας, την Στέλλα Δρούγου, Καθηγήτρια Αρχαιολογίας και την Μαγδαληνή Αναστασίου, υποψήφια διδάκτορα. Πολύ σύντομα, η ομάδα επεκτάθηκε με τους Μηχανολόγους Μηχανικούς, Αλέξανδρο Μπασιακούλη και Μαριάννα Ευσταθίου και τον Αρχαιολόγο, Αλέξανδρο Τούρτα ενώ αργότερα προστέθηκε και ο Καθηγητής Η/Υ στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας, Μάνος Ρουμελιώτης, και τον Λευτέρη Αναστασοβίτη, Διπλωματούχο της Πληροφορικής.</p>

<p><strong><strong><strong><span>O <strong>Ιωάννης Σειραδάκης ήταν</strong> Καθηγητής Αστρονομίας στο Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης (ΑΠΘ). Γεννήθηκε στα Χανιά στο νησί της Κρήτης και πέθανε στη Θεσσαλονίκη ύστερα από πολύμηνη μάχη με τον καρκίνο. Μητέρα του ήταν η αρχαιολόγος Μέρσι Mάνεϊ Κόουτς (Mercy Money - Coutts), πατέρας του ο Μιχάλης Σειραδάκης και αδελφή του η Σοφία Hester Σειραδάκη. Τα επιστημονικά του ενδιαφέροντα περιλάμβαναν τους αστέρες νετρονίων (pulsars), τη μοντελοποίηση ουδέτερου υδρογόνου σε κοντινούς γαλαξίες, καθώς και τη μελέτη των φαινομένων στο κέντρο του Γαλαξία μας. Τα τελευταία δεκαπέντε έτη της ζωής του ασχολήθηκε ενεργά με θέματα αρχαιοαστρονομίας και πιο συγκεκριμένα με τη μελέτη της λειτουργίας του Μηχανισμού των Αντικυθύρων.<br /></span></strong></strong></strong></p>

Description
An account of the resource
Subsequent to an article related to the Antikythera Mechanism by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki team (Marianna Efstathiou and Kyriakos Efstathiou) published in the Journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society decided to declare the Mechanism a historic mechanical landmark. A team representing the Society took part at a special ceremony, which was held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in May 2019. During the ceremony, the Antikythera Mechanism was presented by Ioannis Seiradakis, Marianna Efstathiou and Alexandros Tourtas, a few members of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki team investigating the Mechanism. Main speaker was the Director of the National Archaeological Museum, Maria Lagogianni, while also the president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers read his response. The ceremony ended by delivering the plaque declaring the Mechanism as a historic mechanic landmark.
Μετά απο δημοσίευση της ομάδας του ΑΠΘ (Μαριάννα Ευσταθίου και Κυριάκος Ευσταθίου) σχετικά με τον Μηχανισμό των Αντικυθήρων στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό του Συλλόγου Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών, ο οποίος απαριθμεί περισσότερα απο διακόσιες χιλιάδες μέλη, αποφάσισε να ανακηρύξει τον Μηχανισμό ως ιστορικό μηχανολογικό ορόσημο και η αντίστοιχη τελετή έγινε στην Αθήνα τον Μάιο του 2019. Για τον σκοπό αυτό, ήλθε απο τις ΗΠΑ μια ομάδα εκπροσωπώντας τον Οργανισμό και στα πλαίσια της τελετής, η οποία έλαβε χώρα εντός του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου, παρουσιάστηκε ο Μηχανισμός απο τα μέλη της ομάδας του ΑΠΘ, Ιωάννη Σειραδάκη, Μαριάννα Ευσταθίου και Αλέξαδρο Τούρτα. Βασική ομιλήτρια της εκδήλωσης ήταν η Διευθύντρια του Μουσείου, Μαρία Λαγογιάννη και την τελετή χαιρέτισε το Προεδρείο του Συνδέσμου Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών των ΗΠΑ. Η εκδήλωση έκλεισε με την τελετή παράδοσης, από τον Πρόεδρο του Συνδέσμου, μπρούντζινης ενεπίγραφης πλακέτας με δίγλωσσο κείμενο της απόφασης για την ανακήρυξη του Μηχανισμού ως ιστορικό μηχανολογικό ορόσημο.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Subsequent to an article related to the Antikythera Mechanism by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki team (Marianna Efstathiou and Kyriakos Efstathiou) published in the Journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society decided to declare the Mechanism as a historic mechanical landmark. A team representing the Society took part at the ceremony, which was held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in May 2019. During the ceremony, the Antikythera Mechanism was presented by Ioannis Seiradakis, Marianna Efstathiou and Alexandros Tourtas, a few members of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki team investigating the Mechanism. Main speaker was the Director of the National Archaeological Museum, Maria Lagogianni, while also the president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers read his response. The ceremony ended by delivering the plaque declaring the Mechanism as a historic mechanic landmark.
Μετά απο δημοσίευση της ομάδας του ΑΠΘ (Μαριάννα Ευσταθίου και Κυριάκος Ευσταθίου) σχετικά με τον Μηχανισμό των Αντικυθήρων στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό του Συλλόγου Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών, ο οποίος απαριθμεί περισσότερα απο διακόσιες χιλιάδες μέλη, αποφάσισε να ανακηρύξει τον Μηχανισμό ως ιστορικό μηχανολογικό ορόσημο και η αντίστοιχη τελετή έγινε στην Αθήνα τον Μάιο του 2019. Για τον σκοπό αυτό, ήλθε απο τις ΗΠΑ μια ομάδα εκπροσωπώντας τον Οργανισμό και στα πλαίσια της τελετής, η οποία έλαβε χώρα εντός του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου, παρουσιάστηκε ο Μηχανισμός απο τα μέλη της ομάδας του ΑΠΘ, Ιωάννη Σειραδάκη, Μαριάννα Ευσταθίου και Αλέξαδρο Τούρτα. Βασική ομιλήτρια της εκδήλωσης ήταν η Διευθύντρια του Μουσείου, Μαρία Λαγογιάννη και την τελετή χαιρέτισε το Προεδρείο του Συνδέσμου Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών των ΗΠΑ. Η εκδήλωση έκλεισε με την τελετή παράδοσης, από τον Πρόεδρο του Συνδέσμου, μπρούντζινης ενεπίγραφης πλακέτας με δίγλωσσο κείμενο της απόφασης για την ανακήρυξη του Μηχανισμού ως ιστορικό μηχανολογικό ορόσημο.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The model constitutes the biggest model ever manufactured by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki team. The replica's size is four times larger than the original and is now located at the town hall of the Municipality of Kythera and Antikythera islands, to whom the Antikythera island belongs and where the Mechanism was found. It is made from transparent materials providing the visitor the opportunity to discern the internal side of the Mechanism and its components. Due to its size, every scale and engraved text of the Antikythera Mechanism is easily discernible and legible, respectively.
It was constructed in 2016 and constitutes the only model in such size manufactured by the academic team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Every new model constructed by the team includes the most recent information resulting from the continuing research.
Το μοντέλο αυτό είναι το μεγαλύτερο σε μέγεθος μοντέλο που κατασκεύασε η ομάδα. Είναι τέσσερις φορές μεγαλύτερο απο το αυθεντικό (κλίμακα 4:1) και βρίσκεται στον Δήμο Κυθήρων και Αντικυθήρων στον οποίο ανήκει το νησί των Αντικυθήρων, όπου βρέθηκε ο αρχαίος Μηχανισμός. Είναι κατασκευασμένο απο διαφανή υλικά επιτρέποντας στον επισκέπτη να διακρίνει το εσωτερικό του Μηχανισμού και όλα τα εξαρτήματα που τον αποτελούν. Λόγω του μεγέθους του είναι πολύ ευδιάκριτες όλες οι κλίμακες του Μηχανισμού και ευανάγνωστα όλα τα κείμενα και τα σύμβολα, τα οποία είναι χαραγμένα στις εξωτερικές πλάκες.
Κατασκευάστηκε το 2016 και αποτελεί κατασκευή αποκλειστικά για τον Δήμο Κυθήρων και Αντικυθήρων αλλά και το μοναδικό μοντέλο σε αυτό το μέγεθος που κατασκεύασε η ομάδα έρευνας του Μηχανισμού του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης.
Κάθε νέο μοντέλο που κατασκευάζει η ομάδα επικαιροποιείται με τα νέα στοιχεία που προκύπτουν απο την συνεχιζόμενη έρευνα.
