The Church was built in 1711 A.D. and the icon-stand is a magnificent example of baroque gilded wood carving of the period still standing in excellent condition. It is said that the Emperor of Constantinople gave the icon to a monk from Cyprus called Isaias who had cured his daughter from a long-standingn illness. Isaias then returned to the monastery with the icon. A Russian lady donated the bells of the monastery in 1860. The monastery was founded in 1100 A.D. but was completely destroyed by fire in 1365, 1542,1751 and 1813. On all four occasions the icon was saved but in the fire of 1813 a considerable number of manuscripts were lost. During the first half of the 18th century the monastery was known as the Madonna di Chekka (Excerpta Cypria p.295) The monastery houses an ecclesiastical museum with Byzantine icons, reliquaries and Holy Scriptures among many other items. It also maintains the largest monastic library.
