In the 16th century the island was said to be rich in all fruits of the earth and its gardens adorned with oranges, lemons and citrons, and the wine made of the grapes was luscious and wholesome. Lapithos was famous for its excellent lemons and oranges and in 1928 one could buy 450 juicy lemons for one shilling (20 shillings equal £1). In 1948 trucks loaded with oranges would park outside the municipal market in the old city of Nicosia close to St. Sophia Mosque where 100 oranges could be bought for one shilling. The Turkish invasion of 1974 resulted in the loss of 79% of the citrus production and current exports of oranges, lemons and grapefruit must be a fraction of the 1956 exports. Citrus orchards are concentrated in the coastal areas and in the spring the blossoming fruit trees instill the air with a delicious fragrance and present to the eye a magical sight to contemplate. White table grapes are grown in the southwest near the coast.
