It belongs to the Early Bronze Age 2100-2000 B.C. a period in the history of Cyprus about which much has yet to be learnt. This vase is from the cemetery of Vouni, one of the largest from this period and from where another cult vessel in the same red polished ware is in the City of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The vase on the stamp and another ritual vessel also from Vounous and made in the same manner are now in the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia. As a result many cities later declined to host the Olympics. Politics once again embroiled the Games when 24 African countries abstained from taking part in protest against the inclusion of New Zealand whose rugby team had toured racist South Africa which in turn had been excluded from the 1964 Games for just those racist policies. The outstanding personality of these Games was the Romanian Nadia Comaneci who enthralled the judges and the public with her perfect execution of the rhythmical gymnastics, earning her the gold medal with the unprecedented maximum 10 points from each and every one of the judges. The 1974 Turkish invasion created a mass exodus and uprooting of some 210,000 people from their homes, turning them into refugees in their own homeland. As a result the government was faced with huge problems in housing, social services, schooling, air transport as Nicosia airport was closed and placed under United Nations control, and an economy that suffered a serious blow to all its resources with a loss of 70 per cent of gross output. The government's initial concern was to meet the basic survival needs of the homeless by providing temporary accommodation in tents, finding alternative housing and providing low cost homes free of charge to eligible families. The 1974 Turkish invasion created a mass exodus and uprooting of some 210,000 people from their homes, turning them into refugees in their own homeland. As a result the government was faced with huge problems in housing, social services, schooling, air transport as Nicosia airport was closed and placed under United Nations control, and an economy that suffered a serious blow to all its resources with a loss of 70 per cent of gross output.
