The "Aeroplanes" commemorative series consists of three stamps with three landmark points in the history of aeroplanes.
On 17 December 1903, in a secluded US fishing village, two bicycle manufacturers flew the first aeroplane, changing the world forever. The Wright brothers' first flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered a distance of 37 meters, less than the length of a current Airbus A320 or a Boeing 747. It was the first time that a man made a completely controlled motor flight with a plane heavier than air.
In 1927 a transatlantic flight was made by Charles Lindberg, who travelled alone and non-stop, 5,800 km with his single-seater single-engine plane, Spirit of St. Louis, from New York to Paris, where a crowd of about 100,000 people was waiting for him, cheering for his courage and tremendous achievement.
The first flight to break the sound barrier was in 1947, piloted by Charles Yeager. According to the US National Air and Space Museum, the Bell X-1 aircraft reached a speed of 1,127 kilometres per hour.

An account of the resource
The stamp depicts the affected corpuscles of the hereditary blood disorder known as "" Thalassaemia"" which is incurable and potentially fatal. Sufferers from this illness have to undergo a torturous regime of blood transfusions every few weeks. Additionally these patients need medication to overcome the iron over load caused by the frequent blood transfusions. In Cyprus, this illness is very common. One out of seven people is a car r ier of B eta thalassaemia, a condition that stops the body producing red blood cells; while in one out of fifty couples, both are carriers, thus increasing the probability that the illness is transmitted to their offspring. In 1969, the government, recognizing the degree of seriousness, decided to embarkon a program to confront this illness. Clinics were opened to car ry out population tests to identify carriers. The Mediterranean Anaemia programme was pioneered and in 1978 the Thalassaemia Centre was established under the direc tionship of Dr. M. Hadjiminas. In 1990, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics was established. Among its first priorities was the immediate setting up of the D epar tment of Molecular Genetics for thalassaemia and the implementation of procedures for the pre -natal diagnosis of the illness to be carried out in Cyprus. In recent years pre -implantation diagnosis for thalassaemia became possible and in-vitro fertilization allowed embryo screening by carrying out a cell biopsy at the institute's laboratories. By this method only the healthy embryos are selected for implantation.

The humble chapel of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) is found in a picturesque bay three kilometers away from Paralimni and it overlooks the homonymous fishing boat shelter. The fishermen who keep their boats in the shelter as well as the pilgrims who come to pray keep the candle lit in front of the holy icons.
Το μικρό, ταπεινό εκκλησάκι της Αγίας Τριάδας βρίσκεται σε ένα γραφικό κόλπο τρία χιλιόμετρα από το Παραλίμνι και ορθώνεται πλάι στο ομώνυμο αλιευτικό καταφύγιο. Οι ψαράδες που δένουν τις ψαρόβαρκές τους στο μικρό λιμανάκι και οι περαστικοί προσκυνητές διατηρούν πάντοτε αναμμένο το καντήλι μπροστά στα εικονίσματα.

An account of the resource
Taking the loose surface road to the area of Agioi Saranta or one of the nature trails the visitor comes across the picturesque chapel of Agioi Saranta. Its existence is betrayed by the stone-built canopy on the wild rocks. The chapel is set in an intact cave. The forty stalactites of the cave are what encouraged a devout christian to turn it into a place of pilgrimage. The visitor apart from the pilgrimage will enjoy the wonderful scenery that surrounds the chapel.
Το γραφικό εκκλησάκι των Αγίων Σαράντα βρίσκεται στην ομώνυμη περιοχή των Αγίων Σαράντα. Μπορεί να φθάσει κανείς εκεί ακολουθώντας το χωμάτινο δρόμο ή ένα από τα μονοπάτια της φύσης. Το πέτρινο κουβούκλιο πάνω στους άγριους βράχους καθοδηγεί από μακριά τους προσκυνητές στο εκκλησάκι το οποίο βρίσκεται μέσα σ’ αυτή την απόμερη άγρια σπηλιά. Φαίνεται ότι κάποιος χριστιανός πρόσεξε τους σαράντα σταλακτίτες στην οροφή της σπηλιάς, τους συσχέτισε με τους Σαράντα Μάρτυρες και έγινε κτήτορας αυτού του ιερού προσκυνήματος. Οι λάτρεις της φύσης εκτός από το προσκύνημα θα απολαύσουν και το υπέροχο τοπίο που το περιβάλλει.

A small stone built chapel of byzantine basilica architecture in the Athenian area of Thissio (known as Plaka). The chapel is called ‘Agion Asomaton’ (meaning, the ‘Holy Bodiless Ones’) referring to the Holy Angels to which it is dedicated.

An account of the resource
The establishment of “Agios Athanasios Cooperative Savings Bank” (SPE) in 1929 as a result of an initiative of only a few visionary habitants had contributed enormously to the multilevel development of the community throughout the 80 years of its existence. In 2009 was merged with Limassol Cooperative Savings Bank. a big financial organization. It Assists its members in difficult times of colonial occupation and socio-economic conditions, especially the weaker ones, being the victims of poverty and usury. During the Second World War, the bank distributed to the people in need food and clothing coupons that the Colonial Government provided for this purpose. For a certain period the bank also collected the crops of carob, almonds, wheat and barley of its members which were later sold to the merchants in the neighbor town of Limassol. It also provided its members with fertilizers, wheat and barley seeds, seed and pesticides and pesticides as well as wheat , barley and potatoes’ seeds. For decades it has been one of the main sponsors and supporters of the local authority as well as the schools and sports and cultural clubs of the area. The mansion of George Sofroniou , one of the secretaries of the company, at the center of the historic core of the community housed the offices of the Bank since its foundation in 1929 until 1977. This traditional building has recently been restored with the support of the Bank, will be used as the Municipal Folklore Museum of Agios Athanasios, and a part of it will be entirely dedicated to “Agios Athanasios Cooperative Savings Bank”.
Το έτος 1929 αποτελεί ορόσημο για την κοινότητα του Αγίου Αθανασίου αφού δώδεκα πρωτοπόροι κάτοικοί του πήραν τη χρονιά εκείνη την ιστορική απόφαση να ιδρύσουν τη «Συνεργατική Πιστωτική Εταιρεία Αγίου Αθανασίου», που έμελλε να αλλάξει την οικονομική ιστορία και ανάπτυξη της κοινότητας, της οποίας αποτέλεσε αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι για ογδόντα έτη αφού το 2009 συγχωνεύθηκε με το μεγάλο χρηματοπιστωτικό οργανισμό Συνεργατικό Ταμιευτήριο Λεμεσού. Βοήθησε τα μέλη της σε δύσκολες εποχές αποικιοκρατικής κατοχής και πρωτόγονων κοινωνικοοικονομικών συνθηκών, ειδικά για τα ασθενέστερα οικονομικά στρώματα και κυρίως για τον κόσμο της υπαίθρου, που μαστίζονταν από τη φτώχεια και την τοκογλυφία. Στη διάρκεια του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου η ΣΠΕ Αγίου Αθανασίου έκανε διανομή με δελτία στην κοινότητα είδη σε τρόφιμα και ρουχισμό, που της παραχωρούσε η Αποικιοκρατική Κυβέρνηση. Επίσης για κάποια χρόνια μέχρι τι δημιουργία άλλων οργανισμών, συγκέντρωναν τις παραγωγές των χαρουπιών, αμυγδάλων, σιταριού και κριθαριού, των μελών τους τα οποία διέθεταν στους εμπόρους της πόλης και παράλληλα προμήθευε λιπάσματα, σπόρους σιταριού και κριθαριού, πατατόσπορου και γεωργικά φάρμακα. Για δεκαετίες υπήρξε οικονομικός αιμοδότης και αρωγός της κοινότητας και μετέπειτα του Δήμου Αγίου Αθανασίου, των σχολείων δημοτικής και μέσης εκπαίδευσης, καθώς και αθλητικών και πολιτιστικών σωματείων, χρηματοδοτώντας ταυτόχρονα πληθώρα εκδηλώσεων τους. Το αρχοντικό Γεωργίου Σοφρωνίου, ο οποίος υπήρξε και Γραμματέας της εταιρείας, στο κέντρο του ιστορικού πυρήνα της κοινότητας που στέγασε τα γραφεία της ΣΠΕ Αγίου Αθανασίου από της ίδρυσής της το 1929 μέχρι και το 1977, θα γίνει μετά την αποκατάσταση του Λαογραφικό Μουσείο και ένας χώρος του θα είναι εξ’ολοκλήρου αφιερωμένος στην ΣΠΕ Αγίου Αθανασίου.
