This set closed a chapter in the history of Cyprus stamps that did not portray the island's soul, traditions and values. It was a period where the ideal was everything British and more over that of the King or Queen. In the stamps of this period there existed only the opinion of the governing power that interpreted everything according to its interests. It was the opinion of a people completely different to our own where the basic values in our lives are democracy, freedom and dignity and the right for the same privileges and prosperity for all the people.

In 1971 tourism in Cyprus was still in its infancy though Europeans and especially Britons were beginning to appreciate the good life that the island had to offer. Even so, tourist arrivals were still under 260,000 a year. The Turkish invasion of 1974 almost completely devastated the tourist industry but it awakened in the population a determination to rebuild and excel as never before. Today tourism is the backbone of the economy. Luxury hotels abound and the island's tourist industry caters for the rich and not so rich visitors. By 2001 yearly arrivals were just under 2.7 million.

The Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati, a single-aisle church with a steep pitched wooden roof, is situated north-west of the village of Platanistasa,in the Pitsilia area. It has preserved the most complete set of paintings in Cyprus by the 15th century artist Philip Goul.Inscriptions above the south and north entrances record that the church was built and its walls painted in 1494. All the secondary scenes have been skilfully arranged around the main theme of the Nativity, and have been enchanced with new details. The magi appear twice: once as they ascend the craggy rocks and once as they offer their gifts to the infant Christ.

An account of the resource
In 1970, Cyprus took part in the European Conservation Year the aims of which were to agree on policies, which will help conserve and improve the quality of the environment and adopt the measures necessary to implement them. Cyprus is endowed with a rich variety of flora and fauna with some 1,900 species and sub-species of flowering plants of which 140 are endemic. The giant fennel, the scientific name of which is ""Ferula Communis"" can grow to a height of 4 meters. It flowers between March and May and is found in many parts of the island especially by the roadsides and highways as well as in the open fields, ravines and river beds. It can also survive in rocky terrain up to an altitude of 600 meters.

Man, having the need to find the necessities for his survival established the barter system of trade whereby he exchanged what was surplus to his needs with what he required. Exchanges of this kind had however their problems. The demand existed but it was necessary to have the required goods of equal value at the same time that the exchange was to take place.The first striking of coins was in Ionia and perhaps in Lydia towards the end of the 7th or 6th century B.C. The idea appears to be Greek and not Lydian as some suggest. It is certain however that the development of coinage was the creation of greek intellect. The amazing ability of the ancient Greeks to create beautifully even the most insignificant objects in daily use, gave the coin-engravers the incentive to create truly pieces of art in the form of coins.he value of coins is determined by the weight of the metal from which a coin is made. All countries had coins of specific weight with the result that no exchange problems arose. This system remained in force until the 20th century. All the developed countries had gold pound coins of eight grams and silver coins the size of a dollar. These formed the basis of the trade. The word dollar derives from the German word "Thaler" used for the silver coin of the same size, and it derives from the word "Talanton"and "talandefsi" which was the method used for the accurate determination of the coin’s weight in ancient times. In Cyprus coins were struck towards the 5th century B.C. and Cyprus coins appear on the 1928, 1955, 1972 and 1977 commemorative issues.
