To 2006 o Μάρκος Παγδατής κατόρθωσε ως τενίστας να θεωρείται στους καλύτερους του κόσμου. Είναι ευρέως γνωστός ο σπουδαίος εκείνος αγώνα που έδωσε με τον Roger Federer στο τουρνουά Γκράν Σλαμ στην Αυστραλία, στον οποίο τελικά νίκησε ο Roger Federer. Μετά από αυτό τον αγώνα η Κυπριακή κυβέρνηση κάλεσε τον Μάρκο Παγδατή και την ομάδα του στη Κύπρο. Από το κτίριο του αεροδρομίου εκατοντάδες άτομα, φλάς, φωτογραφικές μηχανές. Eκεί ήταν και όλη του η οικογένεια. Σε αίθουσα του παλαιού αεροδρομίου Λάρνακας έδωσε συνέντευξη, ευχαριστώντας τους γονείς του.
Στην εκδήλωση του δόθηκε τιμητική πλακέτα και στην συνέχεια σήκωσε το τρόπαιο που του δόθηκε στον αγώνα του με τον Roger Federer. Ανάμεσα στους παρισταμένους ήταν και ο πρώην Υπουργός Παιδείας, κος Πεύκιος Γεωργιάδης, ο Υφυπουργός, Τίτος Χριστοφίδης, ο Πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Ομοσπονδίας Αντισφαίρισης, ο προπονητής του στην Κύπρο και άλλοι.
Marcos Baghdatis succeeded to enter the top 10 tennis places through his participation in finals of the Australian Open in 2006 against Roger Federer, who won. For his achievement, even though he did not manage to win, he was awarded and welcomed to his home country as a a champion.
