<text>One of the artefacts ranked among the Wonders of the Ancient World is the Antikythera Mechanism, the oldest extant complex geared device, also described as the first analogue computer. Its construction was variously estimated to be about 87 BC; or between 150 and 100 BC; or to 205 BC; or finally, within a generation before the shipwreck, which has been dated to approximately 70-60 BC. It relied on the second-century BC Greek knowledge of astronomy and mathematics.

The main utility of the Antikythera mechanism was to calculate the exact position of the Sun, the Moon and possibly the planets in the sky as well as the phases of the Moon and the prediction of eclipses. Apart from the prediction of astronomical events, the mechanism could also determine dates related to religious, social and agricultural rituals and events.

The Mechanism was accompanied by an extended “instructions manual” inscribed on one of its parts. The device was operated manually by a user, setting a date in a dial. All necessary calculations were made using a set of gears (at least 39), while the results were displayed on several scientific scales. Unfortunately, the specific purpose for which the Mechanism was made remains unknown.

The identity of its maker is also unknown, but the variety of skills and knowledge necessary for the creation of the Mechanism indicate that it required collaboration between an astronomer/mathematician and a mechanic.

With its discovery, the Antikythera Mechanism demonstrated that Greek engineers of the Hellenistic period had become far more fluent in designing and constructing geared devices than the surviving written sources infer. It is also notable that the knowledge transmitted by the mechanism was lost and similar technological works appeared much later in Byzantium (fifth-sixth century AD) and the Arab world, while complex ones like the Mechanism appeared in Western Europe in the fourteenth century.

The Antikythera Mechanism was retrieved from the sea in 1901 near the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. The divers retrieved also numerous large artefacts, including bronze and marble statues, pottery, unique glassware, jewellery and coins. A year later, the archaeologist Valerios Stais acknowledged that the curious artefact housed in the remains of the wooden box was an instrument composed of at least one gear. The device was found as one lump, which was subsequently divided into three main fragments during restoration. The Mechanism currently showcased at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is divided into eighty-two separate parts.

As expected, the scholars who have been involved in the study of the Antikythera Mechanism were numerous, with specialization in various research fields. The first researchers who focused for over 30 years on the study of the function of the Mechanism published the most substantial and extensive articles available today. A series of articles were also published dealing with the function and usage of the mechanism and its calculations. The authors of the various papers formed eventually the core of the “Antikythera Mechanism Research Group” composed of researchers from Greece and the UK, supported in addition by an international team of astronomers, archaeologists, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, computer engineers, mechanical engineers, epigraphists and papyrologists. In September 2005 they undertook a major new investigation of the Antikythera Mechanism, using x-ray tomography and a PTM/RTI dome for the mapping of the texture of the fragments, which revealed internal details of the gears, as well as inscriptions previously undeciphered.

<text><p><strong>The Antikythera Mechanism</strong>&nbsp;is the oldest existing complex geared device, an amazing&nbsp;<a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47379"><strong>geared analogue computer</strong></a>. It was built approximately 2150 years ago and was used to calculate astronomical phenomena.</p>
<p>The device was operated manually by a user, to set a date on a dial and notice the astronomical phenomena that occur on that day. Respectively, by choosing an astronomical phenomenon he can observe at which date it will happen.&nbsp; All necessary calculations were made using a set of gears (at least 39).</p>
<p>The Mechanism was used to calculate the diurnal and annual motion of the Sun, the Moon and probably the planets among the stars. It calculated the position of the Sun and the Moon on the Sky and the phases of the Moon for every day of the year and predict eclipses of the Sun and the Moon.</p>
<p>It implemented the astronomical knowledge of ancient Greeks about the motion of these heavenly bodies with astonishing accuracy, considering the&nbsp;<a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47380"><strong>anomalous motion of the Moon</strong></a>&nbsp;around the Earth, using a&nbsp;<a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47382"><span><strong>system of eccentric gears</strong></span></a>.</p>
<p>Essentially, in the Antikythera Mechanism, the epicyclic theory of Hipparchus is integrated. This theory was formulated to interpret the retrograde motions of the planets as well as the change in the angular velocity of the rotation of the moon around the Earth. Today we know that the moon's anomalous motion is due to its elliptical orbit as it turned around the Earth (Kepler's laws). It could, also, predict&nbsp;<strong><a href="https://apsida.cut.ac.cy/items/show/47381"><span>eclipses of the Sun and the Moon</span></a>.</strong></p>
<p>In addition, the Mechanism calculated the celebration date of the ancient Panhellenic Games. On the circumference of a corresponding dial found on the fragments of the Mechanism, the words Olympia, Pythia, Isthmia, Nemea and Naa have been deciphered. Internally, in each quadrant, the four years of the Olympic cycle are indicated. All these games were crowned Games, with winners being rewarded with olive wreaths.</p>
<p>The Antikythera Mechanism was a complicated instrument. Therefore, it is not surprising that it was accompanied by an extensive User&rsquo;s Manual. New inscriptions that had not been read for more than 2000 years were revealed, mainly with the X-ray micro-focusing tomography. About 3500 letters and symbols have been deciphered up to now.</p>

The replica's size is four times larger than the original and is now located at the town hall of the Municipality of Kythera and Antikythera islands, to whom the Antikythera island belongs and where the Mechanism was found. It is made from transparent materials providing the visitor the opportunity to discern the internal side of the Mechanism and its components. Due to its size, every scale and engraved text of the Antikythera Mechanism is easily discernible and legible, respectively.
It was constructed in 2016 and constitutes the only model in such size manufactured by the academic team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The shafts and pointers are made from bronze, while the scales and the gears are made from transparent materials. This provides the visitor the opportunity to discern every scale of the Mechanism and read every text and symbol engraved on its external sides. In this manner, the visitor can observe the movements of the gears and the shafts while operating. Due to this transparency, most museums prefer this model to the remainder and the specific replica is exhibited at the National Observatory in Athens, at the Herakleidon Museum and at the Childern's Museum of Indianapolis, USA. Replicas have been constructed in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

<text>The replica is fully functional and has the same dimensions as the ancient Mechanism which occurred after the careful examination of the CT scans of the Antikythera Mechanism. The purpose of its construction is the ascertainment of the accuracy of the astronomical predictions of the original Mechanism. Due to the transient motion of the Earth, the zodiac signs' dates were shifted by one degree every seventy two years compared to the ancient times. For this reason, the zodiac signs attested on the front side of the Mechanism was replaced by the present picture of the sky.
In that way, we are given the opportunity to predict astronomical phenomena for our times and taking into account respective scientific predictions to ascertain the accuracy of the Mechanism's predictions. The specific model is constructed from the same material and assembled in the same way as the original.
For monitoring reasons, the indication plates have been manufactured by transparent materials in order its internal side to be visible.
It was constructed in 2019 and constitutes the most recent model constructed by the academic team of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki investigating the Antikythera Mechanism.
Every new model constructed by the team includes the most recent information resulted from the continuing research.</text>

<text>In 2005, a new study began, in which new technologies were used to investigate the Antikythera Mechanism. In 2008, after the publication of the first results in the scientific journal Nature, Ioannis Seiradakis, Professor of Astronomy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), a key member of the research team and co-authors of the article presented the results of this research in a lecture at AUTH.

After the lecture, a discussion between I. Seiradakis and the Professor of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Kyriakos Efstathiou, showed that the team of scientists participating in the research of the Mechanism did not include, up to that point, a Mechanical Engineer or any other Engineer. Considering that the Antikythera Mechanism is a mechanical devise, the involvement of a Mechanical Engineer in the research was discussed. At the same time, following the initiative of Professor I. Seiradakis, the preparation of a doctoral dissertation on the Antikythera Mechanism by Magdalini Anastasiou began. Mrs M. Anastasiou had studied Archaeology, Astronomy and Computational Physics. Professor Seiradakis suggested that the three-member advisory committee of this dissertation had to be interdisciplinary due to the nature of the subject and consist of him as Professor of Astronomy, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Efstathiou, and Professor of Archaeology, Ms. Stella Drougou.

It was soon decided to set up an interdisciplinary team to investigate the Mechanism at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which initially included Professor I. Seiradakis, Professor K. Efstathiou, Professor S. Drougou, the Doctoral candidate Magdalini Anastasiou, expanded with the Mechanical Engineers, Alexandros Basiakoulis and Marianna Efstathiou. A short time later the team expanded further to include Manos Roumeliotis, Professor of Informatics at the University of Macedonia and Lefteris Anastasovitis, an IT graduate.

The team members have published numerous articles in international scientific journals and conferences and have given a series of lectures and interviews on the Antikythera Mechanism, such as a presentation of the Mechanism at the European Parliament and at NASA's facilities in the United States.

The team has manufactured and continues to do various functional models of the Mechanism, which are in various museums and organisations such as the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, where the model is exhibited next to the fragments of the Mechanism, the National Observatory of Athens, the Science Centre and Technology Museum “NOESIS” in Thessaloniki, Greece, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Municipality of Kythera island, Greece, the Musée des Arts et Métiers, Paris, the Herakleidon Museum in Athens, Greece and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, USA.

By invitation from various organisations the team has organised several exhibitions on the Antikythera Mechanism in various parts of the world. </text>

The team has manufactured and continues to make various functional models of the Mechanism, which are in various museums and organisations such as the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, where the model is exhibited next to the fragments of the Mechanism, the National Observatory of Athens, the Science Centre and Technology Museum “NOESIS” in Thessaloniki, Greece, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Municipality of Kythera island, Greece, the Musée des Arts et Métiers, Paris, the Herakleidon Museum in Athens, Greece and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, USA.

By invitation from various organisations the team has organised several exhibitions on the Antikythera Mechanism in various parts of the world. </text>
