Μετά την εξόρυξη του μεταλλεύματος, αυτό τοποθετούνταν στα βαγόνια, τα οποία, στα πρώτα χρόνια, σπρώχνονταν από εργάτες και, μετέπειτα, με τη βοήθεια τραίνου. Κατόπιν το μετάλλευμα και το στείρο πέτρωμα προωθούνταν στις αβάτζιες (ειδικά διαμορφωμένους χώρους για το μετάλλευμα) και στην γύρω περιοχή, αντίστοιχα, με φορτηγά. Στη συνέχεια, το χρήσιμο μετάλλευμα μεταφερόταν στο εργοστάσιο εμπλουτισμού είτε στο Βασιλικό είτε αργότερα στο Μιτσερό για τον φυσικό διαχωρισμό του. Aπο το 1959 και έπειτα οι εργασίες συνεχίστηκαν υπέργεια, γεγονός που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την διαμόφωση του τοπίου σε έναν βαθμιδωτό κρατήρα, δηλαδή όπως είναι σήμερα. Τα χρόνια της υπόγειας δραστηριότητας του μεταλλείου ήταν τα χρόνια κατά τα οποία οι εργάτες προσβάλλονταν περισσότερο από την πνευμοκονίαση, νόσο κατά την οποία ο σίλικας, η θανατηφόρα ουσία που υπήρχε στη σκόνη που παραγόταν απο εκρήξεις στα πετρώματα, εισπνεόταν απο τους μεταλλωρύχους στις υπόγειες, κλειστές στοές. Τα μέτρα προστασίας ήταν σχεδόν ανύπαρκτα, ενώ, αντίθετα η εταιρεία προσέφερε περισσότερα χρήματα όταν οι εργάτες γέμιζαν περισσότερα βαγόνια και δούλευαν ασταμάτητα, γεγονός το οποίο ήταν μεν δελεαστικό αλλά ανθυγιεινό. Συγκεκριμένα, μετά την έκρηξη στο πέτρωμα, οι μεταλλωρύχοι ενδεικνυόταν να περιμένουν για να εξαφανιστεί η σκόνη και έπειτα να μπούν στην γαλαρία και να μαζέψουν το πέτρωμα. Το μετάλλευμα μεταφερόταν στο εργοστάσιο εμπλουτισμού στο Μιτσερό για τον φυσικό διαχωρισμό του και το στείρο πέτρωμα μεταφερόταν στην περιφέρεια του μεταλλείου για απόρριψη, όπου σήμερα διαφαίνονται μεγάλοι σωροί απορριμμάτων. Το μεταλλείο Κοκκινόγιας λειτούργησε καθ'όλη την δεκαετία του 1970 και, όπως και το μεταλλείο Κοκκινοπεζούλας, ανήκε στην Ελληνική Μεταλλευτική Εταιρεία (ΕΜΕ). The elevator provided access to the underground galleries of the mine, transporting personnel and ore minerals. The trams transferred ore minerals and debris to the storage places, called avatzies. After that, these were respectively transported to the mineral processing factory and the area around the mine. The elevator shaft has a length of 130 m and 6 m diameter, controlled via the control and communication room. At the Kokkinoyia mine, ancient galleries dated to the Early Bronze age used for mineral extraction were found. The mine operated throughout the 1970s and was owned, as Kokkinopezoula mine, by Cyprus Mining Corporation (CMC). Οι εργασίες εξόρυξης άρχισαν στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1950 ενώ το μεταλλείο διέκοψε την λειτουργία του το 1969. Αρχικά, η εξόρυξη του μεταλλεύματος γινόταν στις υπόγειες γαλαρίες, ωστόσο, απο το 1959 και έπειτα οι εργασίες συνεχίστηκαν υπέργεια, γεγονός που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την διαμόφωση του τοπίου όπως φαίνεται στη φωτογραφία. Το κατεξοχήν μετάλλευμα εξόρυξης ήταν ο σιδηροπυρίτης, ενώ, σε μικρότερες ποσότητες, απαντούσε και ο χαλκοπυρίτης. Το μεταλλείο αποτελούσε χώρο εργασίας για αρκετό πληθυσμό όχι μόνο απο τα γειτνιάζοντα χωριά όπως το Μιτσερό αλλά και απο ολόκληρη την Κύπρο. Ο λόγος τερματισμού των εργασιών του μεταλλείου, περίπου δυο δεκαετίες αργότερα, ήταν διπλός. Αφενός οφειλόταν στο γεγονός ότι ο κρατήρας όπου γινόταν η εξόρυξη του μεταλλεύματος κατέληξε να ήταν πολύ μικρός και η συνέχιση της λειτουργίας των μηχανημάτων εντός αυτού να μην ήταν εφικτή και, αφετέρου, η μείωση της τιμής των δυο μεταλλευμάτων που εξορύσσονταν στο συγκεκριμένο μεταλλείο. Όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο, οι συνθήκες εργασίας ήταν επικίνδυνες για την υγεία των εργαζομένων αφού η εισπνοή του σίλικα, του επικίνδυνου υλικού που περιεχόταν στην σκόνη που προκαλούνταν απο την έκρηξη στις υπόγειες γαλαρίες, προκαλούσε την νόσο της πνευμοκονίασης (σιλίκοσης) απο την οποία έχασε την ζωή του μεγάλος αριθμός ανθρώπων. Η συγκεκριμένη ασθένεια ήταν άγνωστη την τότε εποχή και η ανακάλυψή της επήλθε αρκετά χρόνια αργότερα, ενώ, οι άνθρωποι πίστευαν ότι προσβάλλονταν απο φυματίωση, η οποία βρισκόταν σε έξαρση τα χρόνια εκείνα. Μετά από εξετάσεις που έγιναν σε συγκεκριμένο μεταλλωρύχο, ο οποίος στάλθηκε σε εργαστήριο στην Τσεχία αποδείκτηκε ότι εκείνο που προκαλούσε την ασθένεια ήταν ο σίλικας, τον οποίον εισέπνεαν κατά τις εκρήξεις. Σήμερα στον κρατήρα του μεταλλείου μαζεύεται το νερό της βροχής, το οποίο παίρνει κόκκινο χρώμα, γι'αυτό και ονομάζεται Κόκκινη λίμνη, λόγω των χημικών ενώσεων από την ύπαρξη των εναπομείναντων μεταλλευμάτων στην επιφάνεια. Ως εκ τούτου στη συγκεκριμένη θέση μέχρι σήμερα δεν υπάρχει οποιαδήποτε μορφή ζωής. Σημαντικής ιστορικής σημασίας αποτελεί το γεγονός ότι κατά την διάρκεια του Απελευθερωτικού Αγώνα η ΕΟΚΑ προμηθευόταν τα εκρηκτικά για κατασκευή βομβών απο το μεταλλείο της Κοκκινοπεζούλας. Συγκεκριμένα, οι φαλιαδώροι έκρυβαν τους δυναμίτες σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένες κρύπτες στα βαγόνια, οι οποίοι προωθούνταν και έφταναν τελικά στην οργάνωση. Σημειωτέον ότι υπήρχαν εντολές από τον ίδιο τον αρχηγό της ΕΟΚΑ, Γεώργιο Γρίβα, να μην προκαλούνται διενέξεις και φιλονικίες για να μην υπάρχει έντονη παρουσία Αγγλικού στρατού στο μεταλλείο ώστε η προμήθευση των εκρηκτικών στους αγωνιστές να γίνεται ανεμπόδιστα. The Kokkinopezoula mine initiated its operation in the early 1950s and closed its doors in 1969. During the initial steps, the ore mining was executed within the subterranean passages but, after 1959, this was executed above the ground. Mostly pyrite and in a lesser degree chalcopyrite were the two ores mined at the Kokkinopezoula mine. Unhealthy working conditions existed there and workers suffered and deceased from silicosis, an unknown disease at that time. Several people coming from not only neighbouring villages such as Mitsero but islandwide worked there. The mine ceased its operations in the late 1960s due to the crater's small size which prevented the machines' smooth operation and the low demand price for the two ores extracted at the mine. At the present day, rainwater is accumulated within the crater forming a lake, which turns red, the so-called Red Lake, due to the chemical compounds being conducted there. The Kokkinopezoula mine is also historically connected to the Greek Cypriot war of independence (1955-1959) as through the mine the organisation was obtaining explosives for their bombs.
