The data process of the laser scanner and UAV images allows us to generate a point cloud. Then, the point cloud results had been imported in Autodesk Revit program allowing the creation of a virtual building representation. The current state of the castle is the result of several reconstructions throughout the years, each representing different periods of the island’s history from the Medieval period onwards (Frankish, Venetian, Ottoman). The medieval fortress consisted of two towers built in the mid-13th century, when the island was under Frankish Lusignan rule, to replace the nearby fortress known as ‘Saranda Colones’, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1222 AD. The two towers were connected through a defensive wall and their major function was to control the port’s gateway and protect the city of Paphos by providing defence. During the Frankish period, Cyprus suffered several raids from the Genoese and the Mamluks. According to Leontios Machairas, the Genoese occupied Paphos in the 14th century -more specifically in 1373. To make the forts stronger, they increased the height of the fortifications, while, at the same time, they opened ditches to be filled with seawater around the two towers. The Venetians (1474-1571) reinforced Cyprus’ defensive system, mainly in other regions of the island. No significant defensive works took place in the Paphos district. Marino Sanuto and other travellers who visited the island during that period mention two fortresses located at the entrance of Paphos’ port. The earthquake that took place on the island in 1491 AD must have destroyed one of the two towers located near the sea and thus, it is likely that the eastern port tower was abandoned. In the mid-16th century, the Venetians destroyed the fortress to prevent its use by enemies as fortification against them. In 1571 AD, when the Ottomans conquered Cyprus, the tower was rebuilt on the ruins of the Frankish fortress, while it was reconstructed in 1592 by the Turkish commander of Cyprus, Ahmet Pasha (1589-1593). The ground floor and the basement of the castle were utilized by the Ottomans as a prison, the central area of the upper floor was used as a mosque, and the rooms for the military garrison lodging. Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is defined as a system for modeling historic structures from laser scan and photogrammetric data. In general, the process of implementing HBIM involves a reverse engineering solution whereby parametric objects representing architectural elements are mapped onto laser scan or photogrammetric survey data. This process includes a number of stages to get the final product, starting with collecting and processing of laser/image survey data, identifying historic details from architectural pattern books, building parametric historic components/objects, and finally correlation and mapping of parametric objects onto scan data and the final production of engineering survey drawings and documentation. The product is the creation of full 3D models including details behind the object’s surface concerning its methods of construction and material makeup. The HBIM automatically produces full engineering drawings for the conservation of historic structure and environments, this includes 3D documentation, orthographic projections, sections, details and schedules. Although earlier architectural iterations of a larger and older structure existed, the current building dates back to the period of Ottoman rule. Archaeological excavations within the castle grounds unveiled its construction over an Early Christian basilica (4th-7th century A.D.) and a Middle Byzantine monument (10th-11th century A.D.). Additional discoveries beneath the castle grounds suggest the presence of a significant church, potentially the city's inaugural cathedral. According to historical accounts by Etienne Lusignan, the initial castle was erected by Guy de Lusignan in 1193. From its establishment until the early 16th century, the castle endured damage from continuous assaults by the Genoese and the Mameluks, as well as earthquakes, leading to cycles of restoration and reconstruction. In 1538, the Ottomans seized Lemesos and its castle. Subsequently, the Venetian governor of Cyprus, upon reclaiming the castle, opted to dismantle it to prevent its potential capture. This demolition was finalized in 1567/8. Following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1576, remnants or segments of the castle were integrated (circa 1590) into the new Ottoman fortification, significantly fortified. The subterranean chamber and the first floor were repurposed as prison cells and remained operational until 1950. Από την ίδρυσή του μέχρι τις αρχές του 16ου αιώνα, το κάστρο υπέστη ζημιές από τις συνεχείς επιθέσεις των Γενοβέζων και των Μαμελούκων, καθώς και από σεισμούς, με αποτέλεσμα να ακολουθήσουν κύκλοι αποκατάστασης και ανοικοδόμησης. Το 1538, οι Οθωμανοί κατέλαβαν τη Λεμεσό και το κάστρο της. Στη συνέχεια, ο Βενετός κυβερνήτης της Κύπρου, μετά την ανάκτηση του κάστρου, επέλεξε να το διαλύσει για να αποτρέψει την πιθανή κατάληψή του. Η κατεδάφιση αυτή ολοκληρώθηκε το 1567/8. Μετά την οθωμανική κατάκτηση της Κύπρου το 1576, υπολείμματα ή τμήματα του κάστρου ενσωματώθηκαν (περίπου το 1590) στη νέα οθωμανική οχύρωση, σημαντικά οχυρωμένη. Ο υπόγειος θάλαμος και ο πρώτος όροφος επαναχρησιμοποιήθηκαν ως κελιά φυλακών και παρέμειναν σε λειτουργία μέχρι το 1950. Με τη μεταφορά των κεντρικών φυλακών στη Λευκωσία, το Κάστρο της Λεμεσού μεταβιβάστηκε στο Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων και μετατράπηκε σε Επαρχιακό Μουσείο, όπου στεγάζεται από το 1987 η Μεσαιωνική Συλλογή του Κυπριακού Μουσείου. On the exact place a 13th-century church was gradually transformed into the fort we see today. However, until its final form, edifices of distinct roles occupied the site. In chronological order these are a Byzantine basilica, the aforementioned Gothic church, a defensive tower (réduit), storage cellars, prison cells, a police station and finally an archaeological site and museum in recent times. The continuous transition of the role of buildings on the site mirror the political upheaval of Cyprus' history throughout the centuries. Due to the fact that the castle area operates as a focal point of Limassol town in a manifold way, attracted the interest of photographers in the past century. Λόγω της συνεχούς χρήσης του, σχετικά πρόσφατα δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να μελετηθεί διεξοδικά. Όπως φαίνεται από τα αρχαιολογικά τεκμήρια, οι ερευνητές διέκριναν ίχνη κτηρίων διαφορετικών σκοπών και λειτουργιών ανά περιόδους όπως ένας Γοτθικός ναός, ένας πύργος, χώροι αποθήκευσης, κελιά φυλακών, αστυνομικός σταθμός και, φυσικά, μουσείο στη σημερινή εποχή. Ωστόσο οι διάφορες ερμηνείες και ο διάλογος ανάμεσα στους ερευνητές είναι ακόμα ανοικτός. Η περιοχή του κάστρου ανέκαθεν αποτελούσε κέντρο είτε διασκέδασης, είτε εμπορίου της πόλης της Λεμεσού, γεγονός που, κατά τον προηγούμενο αιώνα, προσέλκυε το ενδιαφέρον των φωτογράφων. Abstract A summary of the resource. The orthophotography drawings of Limassol Castle. The data process of the laser scanner and UAV images allows us to generate a point cloud. Then, the point cloud results had been imported in Autodesk Revit program allowing the creation of a virtual building representation. Finally, the results of the 3D environment had been presented in architectural orthophotography images such us plans, elevations and 3D perspectives (P01-07). Τα αρχιτεκτονικά σχέδια του κάστρου της Πάφου Description An account of the resource Paphos castle has been a declared Ancient Monument since 1935 and a UNESCO World Heritage List monument, along with other monuments of the archaeological park of Paphos, since 1980. It is located in the harbour area of Paphos town and its main role was to control the gateway of the port and provide defence against any hostile troops . Most scholars agree upon the mid-/late-14th century as its date of erection by the Frankish ruling family of the Lusignans, despite there being no solid and reliable testimonies regarding any fortification works carried out between the earthquake of 1222 and the invasion of the Genoese in 1373. Its importance lies in the symbolic meaning as the most prominent and dominant archaeological monument of Paphos and therefore it is considered a landmark for tourists and the town itself. The castle adorns several types of media such as photographs, postcards, postage stamps and gravures. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing. Το κάστρο της Πάφου αποτελεί ανακηρυγμένο Αρχαίο Μνημείο από το 1935 και Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ από το 1980, μαζί με άλλα μνημεία του αρχαιολογικού πάρκου της Πάφου. Κατέχει δεσπόζουσα θέση στο λιμάνι της πόλης και είχε ως κύριες λειτουργίες του, αφενός, τον έλεγχο του λιμανιού και, αφετέρου, την προστασία από οποιαδήποτε εχθρικά στρατεύματα. Η πλειονότητα των ερευνητών συμφωνεί ότι το κάστρο ανεγέρθηκε γύρω στα μέσα/τέλη του 14ου αιώνα από την Φράγκικη οικογένεια των Λουζινιανών, βασιλέων της Κύπρου, παρότι δεν υπάρχουν αξιόπιστες πηγές που να επιβεβαιώνουν την ανέγερση οποιασδήποτε μορφής οχυρωματικών έργων στη Πάφο ανάμεσα στον καταστροφικό σεισμό του 1222 και την εισβολή των Γενουατών το 1373 . Σήμερα το κάστρο θεωρείται το πλέον αναγνωρίσιμο και κυρίαρχο αρχαιολογικό κατάλοιπο της Πάφου και επομένως θεωρείται ορόσημο τόσο για τους τουρίστες όσο και την ίδια την πόλη. Για τον λόγο αυτό το κάστρο διακοσμεί αρκετά εικονιστικά μέσα όπως φωτογραφίες, καρτ-ποστάλ, γραμματόσημα και γκραβούρες. Σήμερα το κάστρο είναι ανοικτό προς επίσκεψη από το κοινό. Then, the point cloud results have been imported in Autodesk Revit program allowing the creation of the 3D model. It is also known as Koulas. The donjon lies in the vicinity of the village of the same name in the south-western outskirts of Limassol. The plain on which the castle is located is one of the agriculturally richest regions of the island from which the renowned Commandaria comes from. The order of Saint John, the owners of the castle, initiated the production of the wine which reached even north-European royal courts. The castle constitutes one of the most important building works of the Frankish period (A.D. 1191-1489). Its services were multi-faceted throughout the centuries including being: the main residence of the Grand Commander and the administrative centre of the Order; the estates’ nucleus for the production of sugar and other products of the region; the domination symbol of the Hospitallers; a storage house; water features; and viewpoints. Before the erection of the current castle, a quadrangular curtain wall with supporting rooms on the west side, related to the refinement of sugar, must occupied the area. However, the keep which one can see today was built in the 1450s by Louis de Magnac, the General Commander of the Hospitallers in Cyprus. The fortress is an enormous square, well-built, three-story edifice, built from local limestone ashlar blocks. The castle is one of the most photographed monuments, adorning postcards, postage stamps, gravures and other media. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing. Το κάστρο Κολοσσίου είναι Μεσαιωνικό φρούριο το οποίο χρονολογείται στον 15ο αιώνα μ.Χ. και οικοδομήθηκε με χορηγία του Louis de Magnac, Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου του Τάγματος των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών. Το φρούριο ονομάζεται και Κούλας και βρίσκεται σε μια από τις πιο εύφορες πεδιάδες του νησιού, στα νοτιο-δυτικά της πόλης της Λεμεσού στην οποία έδρευε η Commanderie – Ανώτατη Στρατιωτική Διοίκηση - των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών, από την οποία εξέλαβε και το όνομά του το περίφημο κρασί Κουμανταρία. Το κάστρο είναι ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά οικοδομήματα της Φραγκικής περιόδου (A.D. 1191-1489) και κατά τη διάρκεια των αιώνων είχε αρκετές και διαφορετικές χρήσεις όπως η κύρια κατοικία του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου και το διοικητικό κέντρο του Τάγματος, κέντρο παραγωγής ζάχαρης και άλλων προϊόντων της περιοχής, σύμβολο κυριαρχίας των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών, αποθηκευτικοί χώροι, δεξαμενές νερού και παρατηρητήριο. Το κάστρο αποτελεί ένα απο τα πιο πολυφωτογραφημένα μνημεία του νησιού, διακοσμώντας καρτ-ποστάλ, γραμματόσημα, γκραβούρες και άλλα μέσα. Σήμερα το κάστρο είναι ανοικτό προς επίσκεψη από το κοινό. Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is defined as a system for modeling historic structures from laser scan and photogrammetric data. In general, the process of implementing HBIM involves a reverse engineering solution whereby parametric objects representing architectural elements are mapped onto laser scan or photogrammetric survey data. This process includes a number of stages to get the final product, starting with collecting and processing of laser/image survey data, identifying historic details from architectural pattern books, building parametric historic components/objects, and finally correlation and mapping of parametric objects onto scan data and the final production of engineering survey drawings and documentation. The product is the creation of full 3D models including details behind the object’s surface concerning its methods of construction and material makeup. The HBIM automatically produces full engineering drawings for the conservation of historic structure and environments, this includes 3D documentation, orthographic projections, sections, details and schedules. It is also known as Koulas. The donjon lies in the vicinity of the village of the same name in the south-western outskirts of Limassol. The plain on which the castle is located is one of the agriculturally richest regions of the island from which the renowned Commandaria comes from. The order of Saint John, the owners of the castle, initiated the production of the wine which reached even north-European royal courts. The castle constitutes one of the most important building works of the Frankish period (A.D. 1191-1489). Its services were multi-faceted throughout the centuries including being: the main residence of the Grand Commander and the administrative centre of the Order; the estates’ nucleus for the production of sugar and other products of the region; the domination symbol of the Hospitallers; a storage house; water features; and viewpoints. Before the erection of the current castle, a quadrangular curtain wall with supporting rooms on the west side, related to the refinement of sugar, must occupied the area. However, the keep which one can see today was built in the 1450s by Louis de Magnac, the General Commander of the Hospitallers in Cyprus. The fortress is an enormous square, well-built, three-story edifice, built from local limestone ashlar blocks. The castle is one of the most photographed monuments, adorning postcards, postage stamps, gravures and other media. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing. Το φρούριο ονομάζεται και Κούλας και βρίσκεται σε μια από τις πιο εύφορες πεδιάδες του νησιού, στα νοτιο-δυτικά της πόλης της Λεμεσού στην οποία έδρευε η Commanderie – Ανώτατη Στρατιωτική Διοίκηση - των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών, από την οποία εξέλαβε και το όνομά του το περίφημο κρασί Κουμανταρία. Abstract A summary of the resource. The 2D and 3D drawings of the Kolossi Castle. The data process of the laser scanner allows us to generate a point cloud. Then, the point cloud results have been imported in Autodesk Revit program allowing the creation of the 3D model. Finally, the results of the 3D environment have been presented in architectural drawings such as perspectives (D01 – D04), plans (D05 – D08), elevations (D09-D12) and sections (D13-D15). Title A name given to the resource Orthophoto views of Paphos castle Description An account of the resource Paphos castle has been a declared Ancient Monument since 1935 and a UNESCO World Heritage List monument, along with other monuments of the archaeological park of Paphos, since 1980. It is located in the harbour area of Paphos town and its main role was to control the gateway of the port and provide defence against any hostile troops . Most scholars agree upon the mid-/late-14th century as its date of erection by the Frankish ruling family of the Lusignans, despite there being no solid and reliable testimonies regarding any fortification works carried out between the earthquake of 1222 and the invasion of the Genoese in 1373. Its importance lies in the symbolic meaning as the most prominent and dominant archaeological monument of Paphos and therefore it is considered a landmark for tourists and the town itself. The castle adorns several types of media such as photographs, postcards, postage stamps and gravures. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing. Το κάστρο της Πάφου αποτελεί ανακηρυγμένο Αρχαίο Μνημείο από το 1935 και Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της ΟΥΝΕΣΚΟ από το 1980, μαζί με άλλα μνημεία του αρχαιολογικού πάρκου της Πάφου. Κατέχει δεσπόζουσα θέση στο λιμάνι της πόλης και είχε ως κύριες λειτουργίες του, αφενός, τον έλεγχο του λιμανιού και, αφετέρου, την προστασία από οποιαδήποτε εχθρικά στρατεύματα. Η πλειονότητα των ερευνητών συμφωνεί ότι το κάστρο ανεγέρθηκε γύρω στα μέσα/τέλη του 14ου αιώνα από την Φράγκικη οικογένεια των Λουζινιανών, βασιλέων της Κύπρου, παρότι δεν υπάρχουν αξιόπιστες πηγές που να επιβεβαιώνουν την ανέγερση οποιασδήποτε μορφής οχυρωματικών έργων στη Πάφο ανάμεσα στον καταστροφικό σεισμό του 1222 και την εισβολή των Γενουατών το 1373 . Σήμερα το κάστρο θεωρείται το πλέον αναγνωρίσιμο και κυρίαρχο αρχαιολογικό κατάλοιπο της Πάφου και επομένως θεωρείται ορόσημο τόσο για τους τουρίστες όσο και την ίδια την πόλη. Για τον λόγο αυτό το κάστρο διακοσμεί αρκετά εικονιστικά μέσα όπως φωτογραφίες, καρτ-ποστάλ, γραμματόσημα και γκραβούρες. Σήμερα το κάστρο είναι ανοικτό προς επίσκεψη από το κοινό. The orthophotography drawings of Paphos Castle. The data process of the laser scanner and UAV images allows us to generate a point cloud. Then, the point cloud results had been imported in Autodesk Revit program allowing the creation of a virtual building representation. Finally, the results of the 3D environment had been presented in architectural orthophotography images such us plans, elevations and sections (A.01-13).
