Kάθε χρόνο στις μαύρες επετείους του πραξικοπήματος και της Τουρκικής εισβολής η μνήμη των προσφύγων γυρίζει πίσω στο 1974. Τα χρόνια που πέρασαν πολλά αλλά ο πόνος είναι πάντα ο ίδιος. Η Αστέρω Μενοίκου θυμάται ότι "όταν έγινε η Τουρκική εισβολή και πληροφορηθήκαμε ότι έπεσε στα χέρια των Τούρκων η Κερύνεια δεν πιστεύαμε ότι σε λίγες μέρες θα αναγκαζόμαστε και εμείς να φύγουμε από το σπίτι μας στην Αμμόχωστο. Η οικογένεια μου, τέσσερα άτομα, βάλαμε σε μια μικρή βαλίτσα τα ρούχα μας, και φεύγοντας κλειδώσαμε την πόρτα της κουζίνας, με την προϋπόθεση ότι θα επιστρέφαμε σύντομα."
Το 1990 ο ηγέτης των Τουρκοκυπρίων ο Ραούφ Ντεκτάς προσκάλεσε τους δημοσιογράφους από τις ελεύθερες περιοχές να επισκεφτούν τις τουρκοκρατούμενες περιοχές για να δουν τα αναπτυξιακά έργα που έκαμε. Ενδιαφέρθηκαν τρεις δημοσιογράφοι από την Λάρνακα (και οι τρεις πρόσφυγες), μια εκ των οποίων η Αστέρω Μενοίκου, και δύο άλλα άτομα, και εκείνοι πρόσφυγες που ήθελαν να επισκεφθούν το σπίτι τους. Η Αστέρω Μενοίκου θυμάται ότι υπήρχε φόβος ανάμεσά τους γιατί θα ήταν ένα ταξίδι προς το άγνωστο, αν και μεταξύ τους δεν έλεγαν τίποτε. Όμως, ήταν τόσο μεγάλη η επιθυμία να επισκεφθούν τα σπίτια τους που δεν τους ένοιαζε. Αφού έφτασαν στο Λήδρα Πάλας, και χωρίς οποιεσδήποτε διατυπώσεις, δηλαδή χωρίς την επίδειξη ταυτότητας, επιβιβάστηκαν σε ένα ταξί και μαζί τους ήρθε ένας Τουρκοκύπριος ονόματι Μουσταφά, ο οποίος τους συνόδευε σε όλη την διαδρομή. Μετά από περιήγηση στα χωριά της επαρχίας Αμμμοχώστου, κατευθύνθηκαν προς την πόλη, η οποία ήταν και ο τελευταίος σταθμός.
Η μητέρα της Αστέρως, της είχε σχεδιάσει σε μια λευκή κόλλα ένα σχεδιάγραμμα για να εντοπίσει η δημοσιογράφος το σπίτι της οικογένειας στην Αμμόχωστο. Η ίδια αφηγείται ότι ήταν πολύ μικρή σε ηλικία όταν ξεριζώθηκαν και ότι θυμόταν αμυδρά την γειτονιά, το νηπιαγωγείο και το δημοτικό σχολείο του Αγίου Νικολάου, στο οποίο πρόφτασε να φοιτήσει στις δύο πρώτες τάξεις. Συγκεκριμένα αναφέρει ότι "όταν είδα το πρόχειρο αυτό σχεδιάγραμμα απογοητεύτηκα και σκέφτηκα ότι θα ήταν πολύ δύσκολο ή μάλλον ακατόρθωτο για να το βρω."
Δυστυχώς, "όταν φτάσαμε στα τείχη της Αμμοχώστου η ώρα ήταν 4.50 μ.μ. και είχαμε διορία μέχρι τις 5.00 μ.μ. διότι μετά έπρεπε να αναχωρήσουμε για τις ελεύθερες περιοχές. Καθίσαμε όλοι μαζί σε ένα καφενείο που ήταν εκεί για να πιούμε κάτι. Εγώ ήμουν τόσο στενοχωρημένη που δεν ήπια τίποτε γιατί η ώρα πέρασε και δεν κατάφερα να πάω στο σπίτι μου. Ενώ μιλούσαμε μεταξύ μας, ήρθε κοντά μας ένας άντρας, και απευθύνθηκε προς εμάς μιλώντας άπταιστα στα Ελληνικά. "Είσαστε Ελληνοκύπριοι; Είμαι Τουρκοκύπριος από την Πάφο". "Απέναντι από το σπίτι μου στην Αμμόχωστο υπήρχε (και υπάρχει) το μνημείο του Τούρκου λογοτέχνη Ναμίκ Κεμάλ. Εγώ τότε απευθυνόμενη προς τον Τουρκοκύπριο τον ρώτησα "Ξέρεις που είναι το μνημείο του Ναμίκ Κεμάλ;" Και όταν αυτός μου απάντησε καταφατικά τον ακολουθήσαμε. Δεν χρειαστήκαμε αυτοκίνητο. Ήταν τόσο κοντά. Δέκα λεπτά με τα πόδια. Θυμάμαι έτρεχα με λαχτάρα για να δω το σπίτι μου και άφησα αρκετά μέτρα πίσω την ομάδα μου. ΄Οσο πιο πολύ πλησίαζα στην γειτονιά μου τόσο πιο πολύ έτρεχα. Ξαφνικά βλέπω μπροστά μου το σπίτι μου. Σταμάτησα, το κοίταξα και μετά άρχισα να κλαίω, να κλαίω με λυγμούς. Το έβλεπα ξανά μετά από δεκαέξι χρόνια προσφυγιάς. Για καλή μας τύχη η Τουρκοκύπρια που διαμένει μέχρι τώρα στο σπίτι μου ήταν εκείνη την ώρα μέσα. Ο Τουρκοκύπριος συνοδός μας, ο Μουσταφά, μας είπε ότι "θα ζητήσει την άδεια της, και αν μας αφήσει τότε θα μπορέσουμε να μπούμε σ' αυτό". Κτύπησε την πόρτα, άνοιξε η Τουρκοκύπρια και μίλησαν στα Τουρκικά. Η Τουρκοκύπρια συγκατέθεσε και τότε μπήκαμε και στο σπίτι. Ξαφνιάστηκε και μας παρακολουθούσε καχύποπτα και με αμηχανία αλλά σύντομα κατάλαβε ότι απλά ήθελα να δω το σπίτι μου. Πήγα σε όλα τα δωμάτια. Ξύπνησαν οι παιδικές μου αναμνήσεις. Το παιδικό δωμάτιο εμένα και της αδελφής μου, το υπνοδωμάτιο των γονιών μου, η κουζίνα, η τραπεζαρία, το τζάκι. Η μητέρα μου μου είπε ότι έβαλαν και τζάκι στο σπίτι γιατί το χειμώνα ήταν πολύ κρύο το σπίτι και το άναβαν για να ζεσταινόμαστε. Μέσω του Μουσταφά ζήτησα από την Τουρκοκύπρια να μου δώσει φωτογραφίες μας και αν έχει ζωγραφικούς πίνακες της μητέρας μου. Εκείνη απάντησε ότι στο σπίτι πριν από αυτή διέμεναν και άλλες οικογένειες και δεν βρήκε τίποτε. Μου έδειξε δύο φωτογραφίες με δύο ζευγάρια την ημέρα του γάμου τους, όμως, δεν ήταν δικές μας. Το μόνο που βρήκε στο σπίτι μας ήταν το πιάνο της αδελφής μου, το οποίο δώρισε σε κάποιο σχολείο.
Η Τουρκοκύπρια που διαμένει μέχρι σήμερα σ' αυτό με την οικογένεια της, μας είπε ότι κατάγεται από την Πάφο και ότι αναγκάστηκε να φύγει και αυτή από το σπίτι της με τις δικοινοτικές ταραχές. Η μητέρα μου και η αδελφή μου επισκέφθηκαν και αυτές το σπίτι μας στην Αμμόχωστο, το 2003, όταν διένοιξαν τα οδοφράγματα.
Εκείνο που μου έκανε εντύπωση ήταν που είδα το σπίτι μου όπως το άφησα πριν το 1974. Τα δέντρα μας στο πίσω μέρος της αυλής, δύο μανταρινιές και την λεμονιά μας, την παιδική μου κούνια στο πίσω μέρος της αυλής, την λιμνούλα στην αυλή μας, τα φαναράκια μας στην είσοδο του σπιτιού μέχρι και το χερούλι της εξώπορτας του σπιτιού αλλά και τον αριθμό πάνω από την είσοδο. Βγάλαμε αναμνηστικές φωτογραφίες με την Τουρκοκύπρια και πριν ξεκινήσουμε για την επιστροφή τηλεφώνησα στην μητέρα μου. Διαισθάνθηκε αμέσως ότι τα κατάφερα και έκλεισε το τηλέφωνο χωρίς να πει τίποτε από την συγκίνηση της."

In 1990, Rauf Denktaş, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, let a number of people to enter the occupied by Turkish troops since 1974 area in the northern part of Cyprus. Their final stop was Ammochostos. Astero Menoikou, a journalist, participated in this excursion and visited the town and her family's house.

Η Ίρμα Βούλγαρη συμμετείχε και στον διαγωνισμό Μιςς Κόσμος.
Η Μιςς Κύπρος μαζί με την Μίςς Ισημερινός στα αριστερά και την Μίςς Κόστα Ρίκα στα δεξιά.
Στην δεύτερη φωτογραφία η Στάρ Κύπρος, ΄Ιρμα Βούλγαρη, με την δημοσιογράφο, Αστέρω Μενοίκου.
Με αφορμή την συμμετοχή της στα καλλιστεία, η Ίρμα Βούλγαρη παραχώρησε συνέντευξη στην δημοσιογράφο του "Κίμων Πρέςς", Αστέρω Μενοίκου, περιγράφοντας την εμπειρία της. Στις 11 Ιανουαρίου 1990 το περιοδικό 'ΕΝΗΜΕΡΩΣΗ' έβαλε και στο εξώφυλλο του το θέμα των καλλιστείων και συμπεριέλαβε την συνέντευξη της Ίρμας Βούλγαρη στην Αστέρω Μενοίκου. Η συνέντευξη δημοσιεύθηκε δίνοντας έμφαση "στην κυπροτουρκική φιλία στα καλλιστεία".
"Πραγματικά έμεινα κατενθουσιασμένη από τα υπέροχα τοπία που είδα, την νοοτροπία, τα ήθη, τα έθιμα και τον διαφορετικό τρόπο ζωής στην Κίνα. Πρώτος μου σταθμός ήταν η Ταϊβάν όπου έμεινα τρείς εβδομάδες. Στο χρονικό διάστημα που έμεινα στην Ταϊβάν μου δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να δω και να φωτογραφηθώ στα εξαίρετα αρχιτεκτονικά οικοδομήματα (εντελώς διαφορετικά από τα Ευρωπαϊκά), στις παγόδες και στα καταπράσινα πάρκα με τις θαυμάσιες γέφυρες και τις λιμνούλες. Οι άνθρωποι της Ταϊβάν ήταν φιλόξενοι και ευγενικοί και προσπάθησαν να μας εξοικειώσουν με το περιβάλλον τους. Η ενδυμασία τους είναι Ευρωπαϊκή αλλά ο επισκέπτης θα διακρίνει και ανθρώπους που συνεχίζουν να ντύνονται με τις παραδοσιακές τους στολές και τα κιμονό. Αρκετά ευχάριστα πέρασαν οι τρεις βδομάδες στην Ταϊβάν, αν εξαιρέσουμε τις λίγες κουραστικές μέρες με το βαρυφορτωμένο πρόγραμμα. Οι απερίγραπτες εκπλήξεις και τα πανέμορφα αξιοθέατα χαράκτηκαν έντονα στην μνήμη μου. Ο νέος μας προορισμός μετά την Ταϊβάν ήταν το υπέροχο Χόνγκ Κόνγκ. Κατά την άφιξή μας σε ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα ξενοδοχεία του κόσμου, το New World Hotel, μας υποδέχτηκε ο διευθυντής του ξενοδοχείου και μας ευχήθηκε ευχάριστη διαμονή. Πραγματικά έζησα δύο φανταστικές βδομάδες στο Χόνγκ Κόνγκ, βλέποντας καινούρια αξιοθέατα και ένα εντελώς διαφορετικό τρόπο ζωής. Τεράστιοι ουρανοξύστες και πολυτελή ξενοδοχεία απλώνονταν στην δεξιά πλευρά του ξενοδοχείου που διέμενα, ενώ στα αριστερά η ήσυχη θάλασσα με τις χιλιάδες βαρκούλες και τα πλεούμενα έπαιρνε τον επισκέπτη στην απέναντι πλευρά του Χόνγκ Κόνγκ. Η έκπληξη μου ήταν μεγάλη όταν συναντήθηκα με ένα ζευγάρι που άρχισε να μου μιλά με την κυπριακή διάλεκτο. Το ζευγάρι ήταν Αγγλοκύπριοι και μου είπαν ότι εργάζονται στον οργανισμό της "Μιςς Κόσμος" στο Χόνγκ Κόνγκ. Στις 22 Νοεμβρίου έγιναν τα Παγκόσμια Καλλιστεία 1989, όπου "Μιςς Κόσμος " 1989 ανακηρύχθηκε η "Μιςς Πολωνία".
Η Στάρ Κύπρος 1989 ΄Ιρμα Βούλγαρη θυμάται: "Στο διαγωνισμό συνδέθηκα με την "Μίςς Γαλλία" και την "Μίςς Τουρκία", ή οποία ήταν πολύ φιλική και ευγενική μαζί μου. Φωτογραφήθηκα αρκετές φορές μαζί της, όχι μόνο με τα βραδυνά μας φορέματα, αλλά και την παραδοσιακή μας στολή. Δεν συζητήσαμε ποτέ για το κυπριακό πρόβλημα, γιατί δεν ήθελα να δημιουργηθεί κάποια ψυχρότητα μεταξύ μας".

Η φωτογραφία λήφθηκε κατά την διάρκεια συνέντευξης στην δημοσιογράφο του «Κίμων Πρέςς» Αστέρω Μενοίκου. Η συνέντευξη δημοσιεύτηκε στο τότε περιοδικό 'ΕΝΗΜΕΡΩΣΗ' στις 31 Αυγούστου 1989 και σ' αυτή ο κος Γλαύκος Κληρίδης μίλησε για το σκάφος του, καθώς και για την μεγάλη του αγάπη την θάλασσα.
"Με την θάλασσα άρχισα να ασχολούμαι από το 1937. Πριν την τουρκική εισβολή πήγαινα εξοχή στην Κερύνεια. Με τις ψαρόβαρκες πήγαινα για ψάρεμα με το ψαροντούφεκο. Στο ξενοδοχείο του Κατσελλή υπήρχε πολύ ψάρι. Πρόσφατα σταμάτησα να ψαρεύω γιατί δυστυχώς τα Σαββατοκύριακα δεν έχω χρόνο λόγω άλλων υποχρεώσεων μου. Όταν ήμουν φοιτητής στην Αγγλία, εντάχθηκα στην ομάδα κωπηλασίας του σχολείου μου στα "σκίφς" (στενόμακρες βάρκες). Όταν ταξιδεύω με το ταχύπλοο σκάφος μου απομονώνομαι μαζί με την οικογένεια μου και ξεκουραζόμαστε. ΄Όταν είμαστε στην ακτή, κάποιους γνωστούς θα δούμε, κάποιοι θα μας δουν. Ενώ με το ταχύπλοο, ρίχνουμε άγκυρα όπου θέλουμε και κάνουμε και το μπάνιο μας. Σε όλα τα σκάφη μου συμφώνησα με την σύζυγο μου, να δίνουμε το όνομα της κόρης μας της Καίτης. Το "Καίτη Νο 1" ήταν 18 πόδια. Τώρα το "Καίτη Νο 3" είναι 27 πόδια με μηχανή 150 αλόγων. Το έχω εδώ και 4 χρόνια και ταξίδεψα μ' αυτό μέχρι την Πάφο. Για να ταξιδέψω μέχρι τον Φάρο στο Κίτι χρειάζομαι 20-30 λεπτά, για την Λεμεσό 30 λεπτά και για την Πάφο έξι ώρες. Ο Γλαύκος Κληρίδης θυμάται μερικά περιστατικά από τα θαλάσσια ταξίδια του: "Μια φορά θυμάμαι ερχόμουν από την Λεμεσό με πυκνή ομίχλη. Σε κάποια στιγμή χάσαμε τον προσανατολισμό μας και η βάρκα μας κάθισε πάνω σε ένα βράχο. Εκείνη την στιγμή από κοντά μας περνούσε ένα βαρκάρης. Προσπάθησε να τραβήξει την βάρκα με το σχοινί αλλά στο τέλος την έπαθε και εκείνος. ΄Εβαλα ένα μοχλό για να την ανυψώσουμε αλλά ο μοχλός κύρτωσε. Από το πολύ σπρώξιμο καταφέραμε και κατεβάσαμε τελικά και τις δύο βάρκες από το βράχο.
"Κάποτε δέχθηκε την πρόσκληση μου για να πάμε περίπατο με το το ταχύπλοο ένα πολιτικός. Από το φόβο του φόρεσε πέντε σωσίβια για ασφάλεια."
"Σε ένα ταξίδι μας στην Λεμεσό πήραμε το σκάφος του Δημάρχου Λεμεσού, κου Χατζηπαύλου, μαζί με επαγγελματίες ψαράδες για να ρίξουμε δίκτυα. Φτάσαμε μέχρι το Ακρωτήρι προς την κατεύθυνση της Πάφου. Μαζέψαμε δύο κιβώτια ψάρι, μεταξύ των οποίων πολλά μεγάλα αλλά και αρκετά κατεστραμμένα από τα σκυλόψαρα."
"Μια φορά καθώς το σκάφος μου βρισκόταν στην μαρίνα Λάρνακας, είδα ξαφνικά "μια κεφαλούδα". ΄Ηταν ένας μικρός, ο οποίος κρατούσε στο στόμα του ένα νάϋλον σακουλάκι που είχε μέσα ένα άσπρο χαρτί. ΄Όταν τον ρώτησα τι ήθελε μου είπε "Σου έφερα χαρτί για αυτόγραφο".
Το οδήγημα του ταχύπλοου σκάφους δεν είναι δύσκολο. Αλλά τι γίνεται όταν ξαφνικά έχεις να αντιμετωπίσεις πέντε μποφώρ και έχεις στο σκάφος σου επισήμους; Ο κος Κληρίδης θυμάται:"Σε ένα ταξίδι στην Αγία Νάπα είχα προσκεκλημένους τον Πρόεδρο της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών της Γερμανικής Βουλής, τον Πρέσβη της Δυτικής Γερμανίας και έναν Γερμανό δημοσιογράφο. Καθώς ταξιδεύαμε η θάλασσα αγρίεψε και είχαμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε απέναντι μας πέντε μποφώρ. Οι επίσημοι πάγωσαν από τον φόβο τους και άλλαξαν τρεις φορές χρώμα. Τελικά ξεπεράσαμε τον κίνδυνο και φθάσαμε σώοι στο προορισμό μας".
The photograph was taken during an interview with Astero Menoikou. The interview was published in the magazine "ENIMEROSI" on August 31, 1989 where Μr Clerides talked about his boat and his passion about the sea.
