Το αλακάτιν (αλλιώς μαγγανοπήγαδο/νερόμυλος) ήταν εξελιγμένο σύστημα άντλησης νερού και η εγκατάστασή του γινόταν στο στόμιο λάκκων σε περιοχές με πλούσιο υδατικό υπόστρωμα και επιφανειακή καυκάλλα όπως αυτές των Κοκκινοχωρίων, της Περιστερωνοπηγής, του Τράχωνα και της Κοκκινοτριμιθιάς, των πεδινών περιοχών όπως του Ιδαλίου και των παράκτιων περιοχών της Λάρνακας, της Λεμεσού, της Πάφου και της Κερύνειας. Το αλακάτιν λειτουργούσε από ζώο που περιστρεφόταν γύρω από τον λάκκο και στην Κύπρο το πιο συνηθισμένο ζώο ήταν το γαϊδούρι και, σπανιότερα, η αγελάδα.
