1st April 2005 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first explosions set off by the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters who became famously known as EOKA. (ACRONYM OF ETHNIKI ORGANOSIS KYPRION AGONISTON), and one could say that that was the beginning of the modern history of Cyprus.
Costas Montis in his book “Closed Doors” writes: From that night we regularly heard the bombs and dynamites. Assoon as darkness fell the noise began. We waited impatiently to hear the explosions and we grew anxious
if they were delayed.
EOKA’s aim was the union of Cyprus with Greece but the prevailing political, military, and superpower interests were diametrically opposed to the aspirations of the people of the island.
The political and clandestine intrigues of all involved both internally and externally created national resentment among the Greek and Turkish populations the ensuing consequences of which are still haunting them to this day. The early heroes paid with their lives for the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus and far from achieving enosis, 37% of the island has been under occupation since 1974.
The stamp depicts a refugee leaving her home and taking the key to her house with her in the hope that she would one day return. The painting is by Kyriacos Koulli who was born in 1918 in the now occupied village of Mousoulita.

Founded on 5th December 1959 by thirty five founding members, the Cyprus Philatelic Society continues to prosper, promoting philately in Cyprus and abroad, encouraging philatelic research, guiding and helping young people to appreciate philately and dissipating the history and culture of Cyprus through its stamps.
The Society is a founder member of the European Philatelic Federation and since 1987 is a full member of the International Philatelic Federation. Throughout all these years the Society and its members have participated and exhibited at international and local levels and have won many awards including gold, silver and bronze medals.
In Cyprus, the Society arranges special programs and competitions to promote and spread philately in schools while Cyprus Post has on two occasions invited school children to compete in designing Christmas stamps which were then issued.

The Cyprus Red Cross Society has worked for almost 50 years to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Neutral and independent, its membership is open to all persons regardless of race, creed or political conviction. The Cyprus Red Cross offers its humanitarian services in many fields, without asking questions, and reaching out to where state and other services cannot reach. All the Society's efforts are motivated by the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. During the Independence struggle of 1955-1959, Penelope Tremayne, who k new Greek well, came to Cyprus in 1957 to organised the first Cypriot Branch of the International Red Cross. She remained on the island for one year.

Established in 1959, the European Court of Human Rights adjudicates on individual and State applications alleging violations of civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.
The court is based in Strasbourg in the Human Rights building the image of which is well known worldwide. Since 1998 the court has delivered more than 10,000 judgements which are binding on all concerned. The Court’s Case Law makes the convention a powerful living instrument in dealing with new challenges and consolidates the rule of law and democracy in Europe.
Forty seven Council of Europe Member States including Cyprus have ratified the Convention.

The miniature sheet illustrates Cyprus’ first (doves) second (tree), third (co-operation emblem) and fourth (Europa flower) stamps that were
issued with a common design with other European States who share the same vision of a united peaceful Europe free from the horrors of World War II.
It was in 1956 that the first Europa stamps were issued by France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands who became the founding fathers of what is now called the European Union.
On 1st May 2004 Cyprus became a full member of the European Union which now consists of 28 countries.

After 82 years of British rule, on 15th August 1960, the Union Jack was lowered from Government House for the last time. Archbishop Makarios III was President and Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazil Kuchuck Vice President. Sir Hugh Foot, last Governor of Cyprus, signed the agreements by which he surrendered his authority to the leaders of the Republic of Cyprus. The flag of the newly established State was hoisted on Government House and all public buildings in Cyprus.
In July 1974, after the Greek Junta in Greece staged a coup to overthrow the Government of President Makarios, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied 37% of the land. Britain, Greece and Turkey failed in their obligations and undertakings to uphold the independence and sovereignty of the Republic.
On 1st May 2004, Cyprus officially acceded as a full member of the European Union. In April 2003, the then President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, had signed the Treaty of Accession.
On January 1st 2008, Cyprus adopted the “Euro” as its currency and the country entered a new era in its history. As full member of the European Union, Cyprus joined a family of nations dedicated to promoting peace, friendship, respect for Human Rights, protection of the environment and unity among its diverse people.

An account of the resource
Founded in 1954, the European Football Association, UEFA, celebrated its 50th anniversary in the knowledge that it had contributed enormously in promoting young players, combating racism in football and organizing competitions such as the annual Champions League Tournament. From the original 30 members, it now boasts a membership of 52 national associations and takes pride in being one of the most successful and influential sports organizations in Europe.
With Athens hosting the 2004 Olympic Games, the annual Championship League Tournament opened in Lisbon with Portugal versus Greece and the latter winning by two goals to one. The players were fired by greater hopes of glory and even when they were outclassed, they never faltered nor lost sight of the glory they were seeking. It soon became evident that all twelve Olympian Gods were favouring the Greek team, and when they won the final against Portugal by one goal to nil, emotions of elation, disbelief and despair among the Greek and Portuguese players and spectators were overwhelming. It was a harbinger of what was to be achieved at the Olympic Games later in the year.

The forerunner of the Treaty of Rome was the 1951 Treaty of Paris that created the European Coal and Steel Community. The idea
conceived by Jean Monet and announced by Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister, on 9th May 1950, was the pooling of Franco-German coal and steel production in order to strengthen their co-operation, reconstruct the economies of the European continent and banish the possibility of war.
The Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community is the International Agreement signed on 25th March 1957 by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and West Germany that led to the foundation of the European Economic Community on 1st January 1958. The Treaty proposed the creation of a common market of goods, services, workers and capital within the EEC’s member states as well as common transport and agricultural policies. Furthermore it established The European Social Fund and the European Commission.
The Treaty of Rome had several Renaming and Amendments as in the Maastricht Treaty of 1993 and the Treaty of Lisbon 2009. In March 2011 the European Council amended the Treaty to enable the establishment of the Financial Stability Mechanism for the Eurozone.
