An account of the resource
“Kataklysmos"", meaning flood, is a religious popular festival celebrated only in Cyprus and coincides with Pentecost Day. The earliest story of the flood appears in the Epic of Gilgamesh in the Mesopotamian city of Uruk and was written around 2125 B.C. It recounts how for six days and six nights the winds blew, torrent, tempest and flood overwhelmed the world. When the seventh day dawned the storm had subsided, the sea had grown calm and the flood abated. (Extract from Rachel Storm, Myths and Legends of the Ancient Near East p.92) In Greek mythology the story appears as Deucalion’s flood when Zeus, angered by the impious sons of Lycaon let loose a great flood on earth meaning to wipe out the whole race of mankind. Deucalion however had been warned by his father Prometheus the Titan to build an ark and to board it with his family. The word ""Kataklysmos"" also appears in the book of Genesis and according to the Bible, God who had decided to destroy mankind for the evil and sin which reigned everywhere, warned the pious Noah to build an ark and take on board his family and a pair (male and female) of all living creatures. The ""Kataklysmos"" celebrations take place at the seaside and are unique in their splendour and magnificence. The Development Board of Ayia Napa, in conjunction with the village authorities organizes various activities including games, boat races, swimming competitions, folk dances, and popular songs in rhyming verse sung by different parties in competition with each other, and musical performances by artists from Cyprus and abroad. But the most popular custom of the day is the sprinkling of water at one another symbolizing the purification of body and soul.

Είδος λευκαρίτικου κεντήματος που ονομάζεται Κλειδοπλούμι με αμματωτό ποταμό.Το λευκαρίτικο κέντημα αποτελεί το χαρακτηριστικότερο είδος κεντητικής τέχνης της Κύπρου. Ανήκει στην κατηγορία των λευκών κυπριακών κεντημάτων. Αποτελεί νεότερο είδος αφού είναι η εξέλιξη, η προέκταση των «ασπροπλουμιών» της Κύπρου. Οι κύριες βελονιές με τις οποίες δημιουργούσαν τα «ασπροπλούμια» μεταφέρονται στο νεότερο αυτό κέντημα. Κάθε κορίτσι ετοίμαζε μεγάλη συλλογή για την έκθεση και το στολισμό του σπιτιού την ημέρα του γάμου. Πολλές γυναίκες εξασκούσαν το κέντημα σαν βιοποριστικό επάγγελμα. Οι γυναίκες κεντήτρες «οι πλουμάρισσες» στα Λεύκαρα, οργάνωναν την παραγωγή τους και κεντούσαν στο σπίτι. Παράλληλα, οι άντρες Λευκαρίτες, «οι κεντητάριδες», ήταν έμποροι και ταξίδευαν σε πολλά μέρη του κόσμου στην Ευρώπη και τις Σκανδιναβικές χώρες. Η φήμη τους ήταν τόσο μεγάλη που σύμφωνα με την παράδοση κατά τον 15ο αιώνα ο Leonardo Da Vinci επισκέφθηκε την Κύπρο και πήρε μαζί του στην Ιταλία κέντημα από τα Λεύκαρα το οποίο βρίσκεται στον Καθεδρικό Ναό Ντουόμο στο Μιλάνο.
Το μεγαλύτερο κέντρο παραγωγής ήταν τα Πάνω και Κάτω Λεύκαρα. Σήμερα τα κεντήματα αυτά κατασκευάζονται σε ολόκληρη την Κύπρο, ειδικά όμως στα χωριά Κάτω Δρυς, Βάβλα, Βαβατσινιά, Ορά, Χοιροκοιτία, Σκαρίνου, Δάλι και Αθηαίνου.
Τα πρώτα λευκαρίτικα κεντήματα κατασκευάστηκαν χρησιμοποιώντας το άσπρο βαμβακερό ντόπιο χειροποίητο υφαντό της Κύπρου. Είναι συνδυασμός ανεβατών και κοπτών κεντημάτων. Οι «ταγιάδες», τα μεγάλα κοπτά κεντήματα, αποτελούν τη χαρακτηριστικότερη προσθήκη διακόσμησης σε σχέδια δαντέλας βενίς, σε «πιττωτά», γυρουλωτά, λιμινωτά σχέδια. Σήμερα σε πρόσφατη μελέτη που γίνεται από την Υπηρεσία Κυπριακής Χειροτεχνίας για την κατοχύρωση του Λευκαρίτικου Κεντήματος, τα μοτίβα, που είναι δυνατό να συνδυαστούν για να δημιουργήσουν το λευκαρίτικο κέντημα, είναι πέραν των 650 σχεδίων.Αργότερα χρησιμοποιούσαν το χειροποίητο λινό σε φυσικό χρώμα που ύφαιναν στην περιοχή της Ζώδιας. Το κεντούσαν με λινή κλωστή. Σήμερα χρησιμοποιείται εισαγόμενο λινό σε φυσικό χρώμα. Οι βελονιές που χρησιμοποιούσαν ήταν η «φαττή» (ψαθωτή), η τυλιχτή ή άλλως «στρούχνη», η ανεβατή, η ρίζα και το γαζί. «Οι ποταμοί» αποτελούν το χαρακτηριστικότερο είδος διακόσμησης στο λευκαρίτικο κέντημα. Γίνονται με την αφαίρεση και το κόψιμο των κλωστών δημιουργώντας τριγωνικά ζικ-ζακ, τις «καμάρες». Τις διακοσμούσαν με ανεβατά και κοπτά σχέδια. Το κεντρικό σχέδιο της καμάρας ήταν κυρίως κοπτό. Το γέμιζαν με την τεχνική της δαντέλας απ΄ ευθείας στο ύφασμα. Με την ένωση δύο καμάρων δημιουργούσαν άλλα πολύπλοκα σχέδια, τα «μήλα». Άλλα σχέδια ήταν το ταγιαδωτό, το ξωλούρι, τα καρούλια, τα φοινικωτά και το μηλούδι μακουκούδι σε διάφορους συνδυασμούς. ΄Ολα τα σχέδια οριοθετούνται με τα ξεφτιστά σχέδια, τα γαζιά και το παραγάζι. Τα τελειώματα τους γίνονται με διάφορα είδη δαντέλας όπως τη τσίμπη, το κλόσι, το τσιμπόκλοσο και το κλόσι των κοκάλων. Το αρχαιότερο και το πιο ενδιαφέρον είναι το κλόσι των κοκάλων. Μεταλλάσσοντας τις κλωστές που είχαν σαν βαρίδι τα κοκαλάκια, έπλεκαν τις κλωστές σε διάφορους συνδυασμούς και το τέλειωναν με κρόσια «τους φλόκκους».

Η φήμη τους ήταν τόσο μεγάλη που σύμφωνα με την παράδοση κατά τον 15ο αιώνα ο Leonardo Da Vinci επισκέφθηκε την Κύπρο και πήρε μαζί του στην Ιταλία κέντημα από τα Λεύκαρα το οποίο βρίσκεται στον Καθεδρικό Ναό Ντουόμο στο Μιλάνο.
Το μεγαλύτερο κέντρο παραγωγής ήταν τα Πάνω και Κάτω Λεύκαρα. Σήμερα τα κεντήματα αυτά κατασκευάζονται σε ολόκληρη την Κύπρο, ειδικά όμως στα χωριά Κάτω Δρυς, Βάβλα, Βαβατσινιά, Ορά, Χοιροκοιτία, Σκαρίνου, Δάλι και Αθηαίνου.
Τα πρώτα λευκαρίτικα κεντήματα κατασκευάστηκαν χρησιμοποιώντας το άσπρο βαμβακερό ντόπιο χειροποίητο υφαντό της Κύπρου. Είναι συνδυασμός ανεβατών και κοπτών κεντημάτων. Οι «ταγιάδες», τα μεγάλα κοπτά κεντήματα, αποτελούν τη χαρακτηριστικότερη προσθήκη διακόσμησης σε σχέδια δαντέλας βενίς, σε «πιττωτά», γυρουλωτά, λιμινωτά σχέδια. Σήμερα σε πρόσφατη μελέτη που γίνεται από την Υπηρεσία Κυπριακής Χειροτεχνίας για την κατοχύρωση του Λευκαρίτικου Κεντήματος, τα μοτίβα, που είναι δυνατό να συνδυαστούν για να δημιουργήσουν το λευκαρίτικο κέντημα, είναι πέραν των 650 σχεδίων.Αργότερα χρησιμοποιούσαν το χειροποίητο λινό σε φυσικό χρώμα που ύφαιναν στην περιοχή της Ζώδιας. Το κεντούσαν με λινή κλωστή. Σήμερα χρησιμοποιείται εισαγόμενο λινό σε φυσικό χρώμα. Οι βελονιές που χρησιμοποιούσαν ήταν η «φαττή» (ψαθωτή), η τυλιχτή ή άλλως «στρούχνη», η ανεβατή, η ρίζα και το γαζί. «Οι ποταμοί» αποτελούν το χαρακτηριστικότερο είδος διακόσμησης στο λευκαρίτικο κέντημα. Γίνονται με την αφαίρεση και το κόψιμο των κλωστών δημιουργώντας τριγωνικά ζικ-ζακ, τις «καμάρες». Τις διακοσμούσαν με ανεβατά και κοπτά σχέδια. Το κεντρικό σχέδιο της καμάρας ήταν κυρίως κοπτό. Το γέμιζαν με την τεχνική της δαντέλας απ΄ ευθείας στο ύφασμα. Με την ένωση δύο καμάρων δημιουργούσαν άλλα πολύπλοκα σχέδια, τα «μήλα». Άλλα σχέδια ήταν το ταγιαδωτό, το ξωλούρι, τα καρούλια, τα φοινικωτά και το μηλούδι μακουκούδι σε διάφορους συνδυασμούς. ΄Ολα τα σχέδια οριοθετούνται με τα ξεφτιστά σχέδια, τα γαζιά και το παραγάζι. Τα τελειώματα τους γίνονται με διάφορα είδη δαντέλας όπως τη τσίμπη, το κλόσι, το τσιμπόκλοσο και το κλόσι των κοκάλων. Το αρχαιότερο και το πιο ενδιαφέρον είναι το κλόσι των κοκάλων. Μεταλλάσσοντας τις κλωστές που είχαν σαν βαρίδι τα κοκαλάκια, έπλεκαν τις κλωστές σε διάφορους συνδυασμούς και το τέλειωναν με κρόσια «τους φλόκκους».

Το λευκαρίτικο κέντημα αποτελεί το χαρακτηριστικότερο είδος κεντητικής τέχνης της Κύπρου. Ανήκει στην κατηγορία των λευκών κυπριακών κεντημάτων. Αποτελεί νεότερο είδος αφού είναι η εξέλιξη, η προέκταση των «ασπροπλουμιών» της Κύπρου. Οι κύριες βελονιές με τις οποίες δημιουργούσαν τα «ασπροπλούμια» μεταφέρονται στο νεότερο αυτό κέντημα. Κάθε κορίτσι ετοίμαζε μεγάλη συλλογή για την έκθεση και το στολισμό του σπιτιού την ημέρα του γάμου. Πολλές γυναίκες εξασκούσαν το κέντημα σαν βιοποριστικό επάγγελμα. Οι γυναίκες κεντήτρες «οι πλουμάρισσες» στα Λεύκαρα, οργάνωναν την παραγωγή τους και κεντούσαν στο σπίτι. Παράλληλα, οι άντρες Λευκαρίτες, «οι κεντητάριδες», ήταν έμποροι και ταξίδευαν σε πολλά μέρη του κόσμου στην Ευρώπη και τις Σκανδιναβικές χώρες.
