The mascot of the Games was the little bear Misha, made of cardboard which hundreds of children in the stands had brought with them. The little Mishas danced with joy at the opening and cried in sorrow at the close. For the first time a major political intervention occurred. Thirty nations including the United States of America boycotted the Games in protest at the invasion of Afghanistan by the U.S.S.R. When journalists observing him enquired as to the reason why, he replied: "Maybe somewhere up there someone still loves me". The British athletes had participated in the Games contrary to the wishes of the Olympic Committee back home, and their names were omitted from the list of honors in Britain. In the women's events the Italian Sara Simeoni distinguished herself winning the gold medal in the high jump. In 1980 Cyprus officially participated, for the first time, in the Olympic Games. Wilhelm von Boldensele undertook in 1333 a pilgrimage to the Holy Places and arrived in Cyprus from Rhodes; in his book published in 1336 he wrote: ""There are in the mountains of Cyprus wild sheep with hair like that of goats and dogs which are said to be found nowhere else. It is a very swift animal and its flesh is good and sweet"". (Excerpta Cypria p.16) The moufflons are found in the Paphos forest area where in the middle ages they were hunted extensively by hounds. The Cyprus moufflon is distinct from those of western Asia and Eastern Europe by the curvature of its horns. By 1937 it was on the verge of extinction until saved by a special law making the Paphos forest a game reserve. Tourists visiting the forest station at Stavros-tis-Psokas can see a few at a nearby enclosure or may be lucky to see a few roaming or darting around the forest. He was born in Morphou in 1908 into a large but poor family. He studied in Morphou and graduated from the Pancyprian Gymnasium. He wrote articles for the newspapers in Cyprus and from 1930 for newspapers in Greece. He came into view as a journalist in 1935. In 1963 he was appointed Minister of Education in the Government of Papandreou in Greece. Just as thousands of Cypriots who fought in the Second World War alongside the allies either having been enrolled in the British forces or having proceeded to Greece, Loukis likewise found himself fighting in the mountains of Pindus, and he writes to his brother Evripides. "8th December 1940, My dear Evripides, I write to you from the Albanian mountains to send you my greetings and my love. I am exuberant that with thousands of young men I am doing my duty towards mankind. Life at the battlefront in spite of its hardships, which they do not understand, is of no interest to them. Alone, later, as night begins to fall we all remember our homes, our loved ones and we talk to them. Pride overwhelms me that as a Cypriot I am doing my duty twice". (Note: the first as a man as he says in his letter, the other as a Greek towards mother Greece which he implies) ""24th February 1941, My Dear Evripides, I am writing you once again from the Albanian mountains to tell you about the young men of Greece; they are demigods. In time it became known as the "King of hobbies and a hobby of Kings". King George V was an avid collector and naturally, the Royal Collection, which now belongs to Queen Elizabeth II, contains some of the most unique stamps of the British Empire.
