Bee-keeping in Cyprus has a history going back many centuries and visitors today to monasteries and villages can still come across beehives which are tended by monks and village folk.
Dennis Possot, a priest on his way to the Holy Places landed in Cyprus in 1533.On a visit to a village he noted that the bees were inside the houses and that on the outside of the walls were little holes where the bees went in and out; the wax and the honey were inside the houses. The Reverend Edward David Clarke who visited Cyprus in 1801 wrote: In these little cottages we found very large establishments for bees, but all the honey thus made is demanded by the Governor so that keeping these insects is only considered as the means of an additional tax. Bees have the ability to fly two to three miles to find some nectar, and it takes two million flowers to make 1lb. (453.9 grams) of honey. The bee was a Napoleonic Imperial Symbol. St. Ambrose is the patron of bee-keepers.

The Church of St. Lazarus, the belfry of which is the subject of this stamp is the most significant came here after his resurrection and was consecrated first bishop by the Apostles who were then here. In 890 A.D. his tomb was discovered and the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI the philosopher ordered that his remains be transferred to Constantinople whence they were stolen by the French and taken to Marseille. The tomb consists of a marble sarcophagus beneath the sanctuary and a short flight of steps leads down to it. In 1625 Pietro della Valle, a roman nobleman wrote that it belonged originally to the Armenians and that in the buttress of its outer walls all the stones were inscribed with Armenian letters. In fact during the Lusignan rule it belonged to the Latins, and possibly later by the Armenian Catholics. The Turks had converted it to a mosque but in 1589 the Greeks managed to purchase it back. The Church was restored in the 17th Century. Its graceful belfry was one of the few permitted by the Turks. Belfries were not usually allowed in the Ottoman Empire until 1857, as the ringing of the bells was regarded by the subject races as a signal for an uprising against their masters. Except on rare occasions the Turks had forbidden any church to have a belfry. (Extract from: Historic Cyprus and Excerpta Cypria)

Stone bell tower of the Katholicon, the main church of the Monastery of St Neophytos. The stones are cut from the near by Melissovounos hill. the bell tower is crowned with eight greek acroteria angularia around an ornamental cross.

Description
An account of the resource
Built in 890 by Byzantine Emperor Leo VI, the Wise, on the resting place of St. Lazarus (Agios Lazaros) the resurrected friend of Christ. St. Lazarus arrived in ancient Kition on 33 AD becoming its first Bishop and Patron Saint. His tomb lies under the sanctuary and can be visited. In Frankish times (13th-16th centuries) a stone build covered shed (stoa) of Gothic style was added on its south side. The 3 imposing domes of this Orthodox Basilica Church were destroyed with the original belltower probably in the first years of the Ottoman rule (1571 AD), but the bell-tower was rebuild in a different style in 1857 and after the Ottomans allowed bell towers on Cyprus churches again.

The photographs are a production of the Photographic Department of the Press and Information Office, the Photographic Archive of which covers the period from 1953 to date. The photographs regard both current affairs and cover governmental activities, as well as the country and its people.
