Fra. Francisco Suriano, in his manuscripts of 1484 kept in the communal library of Perugia, recounts how the salines of Larnaca (salt lakes) were once planted with vines and as St. Lazarus passed by he asked from those who kept the vines a few grapes for the love of God. This they refused him. When he asked what there was in the basket hanging nearby they said ""salt"", but it was full of grapes. He then laid a curse on them saying: ""may all these vineyards turn to salt"". To keep alive the memory of this a church was built in honor of St. Lazarus in Larnaca. In past centuries the excellent pure white salt produced by the receding sea waters was a very valuable export commodity and the Queen of Cyprus received a large income from the salt merchants. Alexander Drummond, British Consul at Aleppo, came to Cyprus in 1745 and 1750. He wrote that during Venetian rule the yearly revenue from the salt lakes amounted to 1,000,000 piastres equivalent to í125,000. The Venetians had valued this commodity so highly that they or their predecessors had surrounded it with a stone or mud wall. Michael de Vezin, British consul for Aleppo and Cyprus mentions that in 1790 the salt lake at Larnaca yielded every year 10,000 cartloads of pure white salt. Each cartload carried 1,000 okes. (1 oke = 2 3/4 lbs) Until the 1970’s passers by could see the salt piled up in hills but then it was mainly used for industrial purposes. Irresponsible and unacceptable behavior by road users, and, more often than not, excessive speed are the first causes of mortal injuries. Consumption of alcohol and/or drugs, non-wearing of seat belts or protective helmets, fatigue, carelessness by pedestrians and drivers all contribute to the tragedies we witness on the roads not only in Cyprus but in Europe too. In the fifteen EU States more than forty thousand fatalities are recorded and some 1.7 million people are injured every year. It is obvious that action taken to-date to educate drivers and road users on what constitutes correct safety manners has been inadequate. Drivers in Cyprus tend to take an aggressive attitude to driving and the notion of defensive driving is totally alien to them. It may be time for governments and law enforcing officials to take drastic action in conjunction with intensive education of all road users if this unnecessary waste of human life is to be curtailed. Accidents cannot be eliminated 100% but the escalating losses should not be something to be tolerated. Irresponsible and unacceptable behavior by road users, and, more often than not, excessive speed are the first causes of mortal injuries. Consumption of alcohol and/or drugs, non-wearing of seat belts or protective helmets, fatigue, carelessness by pedestrians and drivers all contribute to the tragedies we witness on the roads not only in Cyprus but in Europe too. In the fifteen EU States more than forty thousand fatalities are recorded and some 1.7 million people are injured every year. It is obvious that action taken to-date to educate drivers and road users on what constitutes correct safety manners has been inadequate. Drivers in Cyprus tend to take an aggressive attitude to driving and the notion of defensive driving is totally alien to them. It may be time for governments and law enforcing officials to take drastic action in conjunction with intensive education of all road users if this unnecessary waste of human life is to be curtailed. Accidents cannot be eliminated 100% but the escalating losses should not be something to be tolerated. Carved in 1476 by a wood-carver named Georgios Laskaris, it stands on a high base carved with 32 images from the Old Testament. The Cross itself has 12 illustrations from the New Testament. In 1792, the Dragoman of Cyprus Hadjigeorghak is Kornessios had the Cross covered in silver at his expense, and Meletios, Metropolitan Bishop of Kition then offered it to the Monastery of Stavrovouni where it now resides. A view of the monastery appears on one of 30 cents stamps issued on 13th November 1996.
