The tesserae used for the mosaics are of various colored glass, glass capped with gold or silver and of marble and stone dipped in paint. They had escaped destruction during the church's iconoclastic controversies and theological discussions and survived the destruction of the church by Arab invaders in the 7th century ; yet after the Turkish invasion of 1974 they were plundered and taken out of the island by a Turkish dealer in illegal antiquities. They were put up for sale in America and after considerable effort on the part of the Church of Cyprus, a court in Indianapolis decided in 1989 that the mosaics should be returned to their rightful owner. Since repatriation the mosaics have been housed in the Byzantine Museum of Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia. Aspioti - Elka, Athens Description An account of the resource At the outbreak of the Greek revolution in 1821 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the Pasha of Acre to send troops to Cyprus and authorized Kuchuk Mehmet, Governor of Cyprus to kill as many Christians as he thought necessary. The governor decided that four prelates and a few prominent and wealthy Christians must be sacrificed to avoid a revolt. The Greek population was apprehensive and remained aloof while Archbishop Kyprianos proclaimed his love for peace and his obedience to the Sultan. The governor however, persisting in inventing a plot, persuaded the Grand Vezir of its reality and obtained approval to severely punish and make an example of the leaders. On July 9th 1821 Archbishop Kyprianos and three bishops were arrested and brought into the square opposite the governor's palace. The Archbishop was hanged and the three bishops beheaded. Many notables were also killed. The foreign consuls showed great humanity and in particular the French consul who helped many in mortal danger by giving them refuge at the consulate and then sending them out on European vessels. Today a marble bust of Archbishop Kyprianos overlooks the square that bears his name in the old city of Nicosia. On the exact place a 13th-century church was gradually transformed into the fort we see today. However, until its final form, edifices of distinct roles occupied the site. In chronological order these are a Byzantine basilica, the aforementioned church, a defensive tower (réduit), storage cellars, prison cells, a police station and finally a monument and museum in recent times. The continuous transition of the role of buildings on the site mirror the political upheaval of Cyprus' history throughout the centuries.
