An account of the resource
The Church of the Virgin Mary of Podithou, whence this wall painting derives, is in the village of Galata and dates from 1502 A.D. The Church belonged to a monastery. When the Russian traveller Basil Basky visited the Church in 1735 the monastery was still active but had only two monks living in poverty. The paintings belong to the I talo -Byzantine school. The Virgin Mary enthroned with Christ in her lap, so - called ""Cypriote type"" attended by t wo Archangels in white chitons and embroidered himations show the successful blending of the B yzantine and western elements.
The Church is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

As a people, Cypriots are very religious. Faith is very important to the Cypriots and the Church has a distinct place in society. The name day of the Archbishop is a state holiday for the schools, while the church is energetically involved in national matters.
In the stamps of Cyprus more religious themes are presented than in any other country in Europe except the Vatican and Malta. In fact between 1960 and 2003 when Cyprus was able to express itself freely through the medium of postage stamps, such themes amounted to 18% of issues compared to 0-8% of issues of other countries.

Archangel Gabriel. The icon illustrated in this issue derives from the iconostasis of the Katholikon from the monastery of St.Neophytos, near Paphos. The 15m. stamp represents the Great Deesis in the uppermost zone of the iconostasis.The icon is dated to the year 1544 and attributed to the hand of Joseph Houris. The wall painting of the Archangel Gabriel and Christ Emmanuel forms part of a much larger painting where it appears just below a choir of twelve prophets who foretell Christ's coming to earth. The message is then taken up by the Annunciation and transmitted down to earth. There is a statuesque elegance in the posture of Archangel Gabriel as he alights over a multistoried Byzantine building to deliver the message to the Virgin Mary future Mother of God. His wings are spread backwards to denote his descent from above. His chiton and himation are swirling as they are caught in the wind of his descent. The wall paintings are from the Church of Panagia tou Araka 1192 A.D. shown on the 100m stamp.

An account of the resource
Archangel Michael flanks the eastern side of the northern door of the narthex. He is a popular figure among the Orthodox people, even today.
His depiction stands out from the representations of the other holy figures in the narthex. He is pictured wearing imperial uniform and stands on a cushion. He holds a staff, the lower end of which forms a lance and its upper end reminisces a sceptre in the form of a double lily. Loros, the wrapped scarf around Michael’s body, seems adjoined with the lower decorated edge of his tunic.
On the left side of the figure, a large spot on the present layer has been destroyed. Thus, the subject layer was revealed, attesting that again the figure of Archangel Michael was depicted on the exact same position, although in a larger scale. Analyses carried out in the subjected layer prove that this layer was painted not long before the layer of 1332 A.D. . Therefore, it is legitimate to assume that the earlier representation might be an ex-voto from a particular donor.
Michael’s duties, as well as those of other archangels and angels, range between being God’s servant assisting him constantly in heaven and spreading His will to humans. Other duties include the protection of the faithful from Satan and also protecting churches. Thus the placement of the figure of Michael in churches is strategic. He is placed either in the narthex as at Asinou or close to or facing the entrance doors. Additionally he is connected to the dead as a companion of souls to Hades. Lastly, it is believed that Archangel Michael functions as an arbitrator between humankind and God. Several hymns ask for his contribution to the salvation of the souls of the deceased and pictography represents archangels participating in the Last Judgement, as in the vault of the narthex at Asinou. Therefore, he is a figure matching perfectly the iconographic program of the narthex.

The Archangels Michael and Gabriel stand either side of the recess of the wooden Holy Cross while keeping a decorated box of incense. The wall-painting is found on the east wall of the Naos in the Enkleistra.
