Kythrea Municipality, Contemporary Photographs Description An account of the resource Ο Δήμος Κυθρέας και η Πολιτιστική του Κληρονομιά Η θρησκευτική και πολιτιστική κληρονομιά καθώς και τα άλλα μνημεία της κατεχόμενης Κύπρου βρίσκονται από το 1974 στο έλεος του κατοχικού στρατού της Τουρκίας. Οι καταστροφές, οι λεηλασίες και η ερήμωση είναι εμφανείς παντού. Γι’ αυτό και ο εκτοπισμένος Δήμος Κυθρέας, στην προσπάθεια συντήρησης της μνήμης, αλλά και διάσωσης των μοναδικών αυτών μνημείων προχώρησε στη συγκέντρωση εκατοντάδων σχετικών φωτογραφιών με την ανάλογη περιγραφή που καταδεικνύουν τον πλούτο της κληρονομιάς της Κυθρέας και της ευρύτερης περιοχής. Μέσα από την συλλογή του Δήμου Κυθρέας περιγράφονται περιληπτικά οι κοινωνικές και επαγγελματικές δραστηριότητες των κατοίκων, οι ενορίες, οι εκκλησιές, τα παρεκκλήσια, οι αρχαιολογικοί θησαυροί, η Κυθρεώτικη φύση, τα εκπαιδευτήρια και πολλά άλλα. Η σκλαβωμένη Κυθρέα βρίσκεται δώδεκα χιλιόμετρα βορειανατολικά της επαρχίας Λευκωσίας στην οποία και ανήκει. Είναι κτισμένη στους νότιους πρόποδες του Πενταδάκτυλου με τα βόρεια σύνορα της να ταυτίζονται με τα σύνορα των επαρχιών Λευκωσίας και Κερύνειας. Το 1974 η Τουρκία εισέβαλε παράνομα στην Κύπρο και κατέλαβε σχεδόν το 37% του κυπριακού εδάφους, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της κωμόπολης της Κυθρέας. Αυτή αποτελείτο από 6 ενορίες: τη Χρυσίδα, την Αγία Μαρίνα, τον Άγιο Ανδρόνικο, τον Άγιο Γεώργιο, τη Χαρδακιώτισσα και τη Συρκανιά. Ξακουστός ήταν ο Κεφαλόβρυσος, η μεγαλύτερη πηγή νερού της Κύπρου, που χρησιμοποιείτο για την ύδρευση και άρδευση των εσπεριδοειδών και άλλων καλλιεργειών. Δυστυχώς σήμερα τίποτα δεν είναι το ίδιο με την προ της εισβολής περίοδο. Εκκλησιές και παρεκκλήσια, σπίτια, καφενεία, σωματεία και άλλα υποστατικά είναι ερημωμένα, η φύση ξεραμένη, τοπία παραμελημένα. Τα τούρκικα στρατεύματα βρίσκονται παντού και μεγάλο μέρος της Κυθρέας είναι εγκλωβισμένο σε στρατιωτικές περιοχές (μέχρι και εκκλησιές χρησιμοποιούνται ως αποθήκες πυρομαχικών, όπως ο Άγιος Γεώργιος). Παράνομοι Τούρκοι έποικοι κατοικούν σε σπίτια των Κυθρεωτών και διάφοροι ναοί έχουν μετατραπεί σε τζαμιά (Παναγίας Χαρδακιώτισσας και Αγίας Άννας). Still Image A static visual representation. Η ευρύτερη περιοχή της Κυθρέας αποτελούσε μια όαση στους πρόποδες της οροσειράς του Πενταδακτύλου, με την τεράστια ποικιλία βιοτόπων και φυτών της. Γενεσιουργός παράγοντας ήταν ο ζωογόνος Κεφαλόβρυσος, η μεγαλύτερη πηγή της Κύπρου. Η περιοχή αποτελούσε μια από τις πλουσιότερες σε βιοποικιλότητα στην Κύπρο αλλά και στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Η ποικιλία μικροκλιμάτων επέτρεπε την ύπαρξη στην περιοχή σπάνιων φυτικών ειδών, όπως τα Salvia Veneris, Brassica hilarionis, Sideritis cypria κ.α., από ερημικά μέχρι τροπικά και υποτροπικά, ενώ τα υδρόβια και παρυδάτια είδη αποτελούσαν φαινόμενο μοναδικό και πολύτιμη φυσική κληρονομιά. Γενικά εκτιμάται ότι τα πλείστα από τα ιθαγενή φυτικά είδη της νήσου, ίσως τα 2/3, συναντώνται στην περιοχή της Κυθρέας. Εξαιρετικά πλούσια ήταν επίσης η πανίδα της περιοχής με τεράστιο πτηνολογικό ενδιαφέρον και αφθονία λεπιδοπτέρων (πεταλούδων). Δυστυχώς χωρίς το νερό του Κεφαλόβρυσου μετά το 1974 έχει επέλθει μια ανεπανάληπτη καταστροφή στην Κυθρεώτικη φύση.
