In the following years the children who had survived this tragedy were invited by the government to spend time at holiday camps in the island's mountain resorts. The Armenian community also provided financial aid, clothing and foodstuff. Although the establishment of formal ties between the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Armenia came about after the latter was free of Soviet rule, the Armenian connection with Cyprus dates to the 6th century A.D. when in 578 the Byzantine Emperor re-located 10,000 Armenians to Cyprus. The Chronicler Evagrius Scholasticus remarked: "Thus land, which had been previously untilled, was everywhere restored to cultivation". By the 15th century the community had grown to 30,000 but over the ensuing centuries many emigrated and today's community numbers about 2,000.
