Apollo, Zeus’ son by Leto was a seven-month child, but Gods grow up swiftly. Themis fed him on nectar and ambrosia, and when the fourth day dawned he called for bow and arrows with which Hephaestus at once provided him. Apollo had long been in love with Daphne the mountain nymph, a priestess of Mother Earth, but when he pursued and overtook her, she cried out to Mother Earth who in the nick of time spirited her to Crete. Mother Earth left a laurel tree in her place and from its leaves Apollo made a wreath to console himself. When the Argives found the city of Thebes evacuated, they broke in, razed the walls and collected the booty. They sent the best of it to Apollo at Delphi including Teiresias’ daughter Daphne who had stayed behind and she became Apollo's Pythoness. (Extract from: The Greek Myths, I, II, pp. 79, 355)

The stamp depicts the "Palaestra" wrestling school, which forms part of the sanctuary of Apollo Hylates in Curium and erected circa 100 A.D. In the 4th century the Phoenician "Reshef " became identified with the God Apollo and "Hylates", the local God of the woodlands was equated with Apollo to become Apollo Hylates. In the Greek myths we come across Hylas of the woodland, the Dryopian squire to Hercules, who was held to foreshadow wet weather thus the object of any sacrifices at the sanctuary being to bring on the autumn rains. Tradition connects the founding of Curium to Greeks from Argos, who settled here in 1595 B.C., and the earliest reference made to the city of Curium is made by the geographer Strabo in the last century B.C.

On 4th March 1964, the Security Council adopted unanimously Resolution 186(1964) whereby noting the situation with regard to Cyprus: Called upon all members to refrain from the threat of use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, as well as any action or threat of action that would worsen the situation of the sovereign Republic of Cyprus, or endanger international peace.Recommended the creation of a United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus for a period of three months whose main objectives would be the preservation of international peace and security, the prevention of a recurrence of fighting and the maintenance and restoration of Law and Order.Recommended that the Secretary-General designate a mediator in agreement with the Governments of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom to promote an agreed settlement of the problem confronting Cyprus, all in accordance with the charter of the United Nations and the well being of the people as a whole.

Ο Δήμος Κυθρέας και η Πολιτιστική του Κληρονομιά
Η θρησκευτική και πολιτιστική κληρονομιά καθώς και τα άλλα μνημεία της κατεχόμενης Κύπρου βρίσκονται από το 1974 στο έλεος του κατοχικού στρατού της Τουρκίας. Οι καταστροφές, οι λεηλασίες και η ερήμωση είναι εμφανείς παντού. Γι’ αυτό και ο εκτοπισμένος Δήμος Κυθρέας, στην προσπάθεια συντήρησης της μνήμης, αλλά και διάσωσης των μοναδικών αυτών μνημείων προχώρησε στη συγκέντρωση εκατοντάδων σχετικών φωτογραφιών με την ανάλογη περιγραφή που καταδεικνύουν τον πλούτο της κληρονομιάς της Κυθρέας και της ευρύτερης περιοχής.
Μέσα από την συλλογή του Δήμου Κυθρέας περιγράφονται περιληπτικά οι κοινωνικές και επαγγελματικές δραστηριότητες των κατοίκων, οι ενορίες, οι εκκλησιές, τα παρεκκλήσια, οι αρχαιολογικοί θησαυροί, η Κυθρεώτικη φύση, τα εκπαιδευτήρια και πολλά άλλα.
Η σκλαβωμένη Κυθρέα βρίσκεται δώδεκα χιλιόμετρα βορειανατολικά της επαρχίας Λευκωσίας στην οποία και ανήκει. Είναι κτισμένη στους νότιους πρόποδες του Πενταδάκτυλου με τα βόρεια σύνορα της να ταυτίζονται με τα σύνορα των επαρχιών Λευκωσίας και Κερύνειας. Το 1974 η Τουρκία εισέβαλε παράνομα στην Κύπρο και κατέλαβε σχεδόν το 37% του κυπριακού εδάφους, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της κωμόπολης της Κυθρέας. Αυτή αποτελείτο από 6 ενορίες: τη Χρυσίδα, την Αγία Μαρίνα, τον Άγιο Ανδρόνικο, τον Άγιο Γεώργιο, τη Χαρδακιώτισσα και τη Συρκανιά. Ξακουστός ήταν ο Κεφαλόβρυσος, η μεγαλύτερη πηγή νερού της Κύπρου, που χρησιμοποιείτο για την ύδρευση και άρδευση των εσπεριδοειδών και άλλων καλλιεργειών.
Δυστυχώς σήμερα τίποτα δεν είναι το ίδιο με την προ της εισβολής περίοδο. Παράνομοι Τούρκοι έποικοι κατοικούν σε σπίτια των Κυθρεωτών και διάφοροι ναοί έχουν μετατραπεί σε τζαμιά (Παναγίας Χαρδακιώτισσας και Αγίας Άννας).

Ένα μικρό δείγμα από τους ανεκτίμητους και πολυάριθμους θησαυρούς των βεβηλωμένων και λεηλατημένων εκκλησιών και παρεκκλησιών της Κυθρέας που άλλοτε τις κοσμούσαν. Επιστρέφουμε, έτσι, νοερά στους περίλαμπρους ναούς μας, τους απαστράποντες από τη χάρη και την ευλογία του Κυρίου. Ψηλαφούμε νοερά τις κλεμμένες εικόνες μας, που αρκετές παραμένουν ακόμα στα χέρια ληστών και κλεπταποδόχων. Θλιβερή μαρτυρία της λεηλασίας και της εθνοκάθαρσης που συντελέστηκε. Μαρτυρία κι αυτή, μαζί με πολλές άλλες, όσων φοβερών πληγμάτων κατάφεραν κατά της αγαπημένης πατρίδας μας οι Τούρκοι εισβολείς το 1974 και μετά.

Apostle Paul is located on the north respond of the western transverse arch of the naos while Saint Peter is portrayed opposite, on the south respond. The respond was placed as a reinforcement during alterations took place in the thirteenth century, covering the original frescoes of the twelfth century. An important detail is that these may be executed during the same time as the Virgin and the frescoes on the triumphal arch of the apse, but not by the same hand.
The figure of Paul consists of the subjective thirteenth-century fresco layer on the lower part of his body and the overlying fourteenth-century fresco layer on the upper part. Therefore, the fresco dated to the re-painting programme of the fourteenth-century follows the stylistic tradition of the former. However, the red background of the former fresco layer was not adopted by the overlying fresco. It has a blue background just to be harmonised with the rest of the frescoes of the central nave.
Peter is depicted facing to the left, blessing with his right hand, holding an open scroll in the left hand and is dressed in a grey chiton and pink himation. The garments of Paul are long enough to touch his feet and are painted over the bottom frame.

What is visible today is the standing figure of Peter, which consists of the subjective thirteenth-century fresco layer on the lower part of his body and the overlying fourteenth-century fresco layer on the upper part. Therefore, the fresco dated to the re-painting programme of the fourteenth-century follows the stylistic tradition of the former fresco layer.
He is depicted facing to the right, blessing with his right hand and holding an open scroll in the left hand. He is dressed in a grey chiton and ocher himation on a red background on the former fresco layer. The overlying fresco has a blue background. The garments of Peter are long enough to touch his feet, which are painted over the bottom frame.
Behind the respond of Saint Peter, there is still visible a small part of a figure dating to the initial twelfth-century painting. The figure bears a crown and thick, brown hair indicating a young man, therefore not Peter. Thus the thirteenth-century layer does not seem to follow the original depiction. The most likely scenario suggests that the painter or painters adopted a novel trend, Peter and Paul placed across the naos and facing each other, which arose in the period between the twelfth and the late thirteenth-century. The first appearance of this scheme is to be found in the church of Saint Nicholas of the Roof at Lagoudera, and in the almost contemporary to Asinou, church of Christ Antiphonetes at Kalogrea.
