An account of the resource
Kolossi castle is a medieval castle built in the 15th century A.D. It is also known as Koulas. The donjon lies in the vicinity of the village of the same name in the south-western outskirts of Limassol. The plain on which the castle is located is one of the agriculturally richest regions of the island from which the renowned Commandaria comes from. The order of Saint John, the owners of the castle, initiated the production of the wine which reached even north-European royal courts. The castle constitutes one of the most important building works of the Frankish period (A.D. 1191-1489). Its services were multi-faceted throughout the centuries including being: the main residence of the Grand Commander and the administrative centre of the Order; the estates’ nucleus for the production of sugar and other products of the region; the domination symbol of the Hospitallers; a storage house; water features; and viewpoints. Before the erection of the current castle, a quadrangular curtain wall with supporting rooms on the west side, related to the refinement of sugar, must occupied the area. However, the keep which one can see today was built in the 1450s by Louis de Magnac, the General Commander of the Hospitallers in Cyprus. The fortress is an enormous square, well-built, three-story edifice, built from local limestone ashlar blocks. The castle is one of the most photographed monuments, adorning postcards, postage stamps, gravures and other media. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing.
Το κάστρο Κολοσσίου είναι Μεσαιωνικό φρούριο το οποίο χρονολογείται στον 15ο αιώνα μ.Χ. και οικοδομήθηκε με χορηγία του Louis de Magnac, Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου του Τάγματος των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών. Το φρούριο ονομάζεται και Κούλας και βρίσκεται σε μια από τις πιο εύφορες πεδιάδες του νησιού, στα νοτιο-δυτικά της πόλης της Λεμεσού στην οποία έδρευε η Commanderie – Ανώτατη Στρατιωτική Διοίκηση - των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών, από την οποία εξέλαβε και το όνομά του το περίφημο κρασί Κουμανταρία.
Το κάστρο αποτελεί ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά οικοδομήματα της Φραγκικής περιόδου (A.D. 1191-1489) και κατά τη διάρκεια των αιώνων είχε αρκετές και διαφορετικές χρήσεις όπως η κύρια κατοικία του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου και το διοικητικό κέντρο του Τάγματος, κέντρο παραγωγής ζάχαρης και άλλων προϊόντων της περιοχής, σύμβολο κυριαρχίας των Ιωαννιτών Ιπποτών, αποθηκευτικοί χώροι, δεξαμενές νερού και παρατηρητήριο.
Το κάστρο αποτελεί ένα απο τα πιο πολυφωτογραφημένα μνημεία του νησιού, διακοσμώντας καρτ-ποστάλ, γραμματόσημα, γκραβούρες και άλλα μέσα. Σήμερα το κάστρο είναι ανοικτό προς επίσκεψη από το κοινό.

This fresco is from the Church and Monastery of St. John Lampadistis in the village of Kalopanayiotis which is 2,350 feet above sea level on the North side of the Troodos Mountains. The monastery complex comprises several buildings including the Church of St. Heracleidius dating from the 11th century, and the Church of St. John Lampadistis. The two churches were connected in the 18th century by an arch cut through the wall of the Northern arm. Rupert Gunnis, in his book "Historic Cyprus" observed the curious custom of apportioning a church(s) between the Latin and the Orthodox rites. The Latin church being on the North and the Orthodox on the South with no division between them. The fresco is just one of more than thirty scenes from the New Testament, and Andreas and Judith Stylianou in their book "The Painted Churches of Cyprus" suggest a date c.1400 for the series of paintings in the Church of St. Heracleidius. The Orthodox monk and traveller Basil Grogorovich Barskii visited the monastery in 1735 and in his MS folio 130r in the Akademyia Nauk, Kiev, he left an ink and pen drawing of the monastery of St. Heracleidius where he said ten monks were residing at the time. The fresco is just one of more than thirty scenes from the New Testament, and Andreas and Judith Stylianou in their book "The Painted Churches of Cyprus" suggest a date c.1400 for the series of paintings in the Church of St. Heracleidius. The Orthodox monk and traveller Basil Grogorovich Barskii visited the monastery in 1735 and in his MS folio 130r in the Akademyia Nauk, Kiev, he left an ink and pen drawing of the monastery of St. Heracleidius where he said ten monks were residing at the time. From a historical, geographical and cultural point of view, Cyprus has throughout the centuries been at the extremity of and connected to Europe by European dynastic rulers as well as trade. It is therefore understandable that the Government of Cyprus expressed its interest in an association with the European Economic Community (EEC) as early as 1962. For reasons beyond its control it was not until 1971 that the Government entered into negotiations with the EEC and on 19th December 1972 signed an Assosiation Agreement which was to come into effect on 1st July 1973. The Agreement provided mainly for the progressive elimination of obstacles regarding the main body of trade covering both agriculture and industrial products. Eventually the Agreement was to lead to a complete Customs Union. The Turkish invasion of 1974 disrupted the implementation causing many delays. Many new protocols, terms and conditions had to be worked and agreed upon. Under the provisions of the 1987 Protocol completion
of the Customs Union was to be achieved by 2001-2002. By now the EEC had become the European Union (EU) and the elimination of all tarrifs was now required. Cyprus was to adopt progressively the Common Customs Tarrif (CCT) of the EU and bring its own customs tariffs in line with those of the EU by the end of 1997.The implementation of the Agreement was monitored and reviewed periodically by the Association Council.

This fresco of the Adoration of the Magic is from the Church and Monastery of St. John Lampadistis in the village of Kalopanayiotis which is 2,350 feet above sea level on the North side of the Troodos Mountains. The monastery complex comprises several buildings including the Church of St. Heracleidius dating from the 11th century, and the Church of St. John Lampadistis. The two churches were connected in the 18th century by an arch cut through the wall of the Northern arm. Rupert Gunnis, in his book "Historic Cyprus" observed the curious custom of apportioning a church(s) between the Latin and the Orthodox rites. The Latin church being on the North and the Orthodox on the South with no division between them. Vasilis Michaelides (1850-1917) Greek Cypriot poet was born at Lefkonico and lived a difficult life full of privations. As an adolescent and a young man alongside a char ming father and a man of God, he moved to Dhali, Larnaca and Limassol where he settled down as a kind of nursephar macist-super visor at the hospital. He was a charismatic but almost illiterate man, yet in him existed a true expression of the long suffer ing and unfulfilled national identity. He wrote patr iotic poems covering major national events and his best pieces of poetry are: The 9th July of 1821, Cyprus in the Mother land and The Fairy. He died in obscurity and poverty though he had written some of the best verses in the history of Greek poetry in Cyprus. Decades after his death, he and Demetrios Lipertis (1866-1937) remind us which are our true poetic roots and which are the true directions of our ethnic and spiritual orientations
