The stamp depicts Theseus swinging a huge club. It forms the central part of the Theseus mosaic in the palace of the Roman proconsuls of Cyprus at Kato Paphos.The site is known as the house of Theseus and is dated bet ween the 2nd and 6th centuries A.D. Mythology relates how when Theseus had set out to free the bandit-r idden coast which led from Troezen to Athens, he was waylaid at Epidaurus by the cripple Periphetes who used his huge brazen club to kill wayfarers. Theseus who would pick no quarrels, but take vengeance on all who dared molest him, making the punishment fit the crime, wrenched the club from Periphetes’ hands and battered him to death.Delighted with its size and weight, he proudly carried it about ever af ter wards; though he himself had been able to parry its murderous swing, in his hands it never failed to kill. This stamp depicts the naval battle of 965 A.D. in which Greek fire was used against the enemy, and Nicephorus II Phocas, Emperor of B yzantium (963-969) defeated the Egyptian fleet off the coast of the mainland, and then turning his attention to Cyprus he dispatched his troops under the command of Nicetas Chalcutzes, an aristocrat of ancient Roman nobility, to occupy the island and once again make it a province of Byzantium.

Spells and lullabies have played a significant role in all cultures of the world, and Cyprus is no exception to this universal phenomenon. Here is an example of each from Cypriot culture. A Spell:""In the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. (Thrice) As the stars take their course, as the fountains flow, as the rivers run, as the brooks glide, as the Virgin Mary hies to her sole begotten son, so may all evil hasten from my house and go to the wild mountains, to the wild hills and to the barren trees"". A Lullaby: ""O, Saint Marina, Holy Lady Who lulls the babes to sleep Lull this one too, I pray That he may sleep and grow And waken well refreshed. His mother is not here She went down to the river, To bring bay leaves and water To wash his clothes And little gowns.I gave him to you tiny wee Return him to me fully grown"".
