Ο Ιωάννης Κότσαπας, γιος του Χριστόδουλου Κυριακού Γιωρκή Κουτσού «Κότσαπα» (1865;) και της Παρασκευούς Γιαννή Χατζηδημήτρη Καρπεδκιά γεννήθηκε το 1885 στην Κυπερούντα και πέθανε το 1965 στη Λεμεσό. Λόγω της μεγάλης, τότε, φτώχειας αναγκάστηκε, όπως και άλλοι συνομήλικοί του Κυπερουντιώτες [Νικηφόρος και Θεοχάρης Μ. Παπαγιώρκη, Αντώνης Αντωνιάδης (Γ. Γιούφτη), Αντώνης και Χαράλαμπος Γιακουμή Κουτσολεύτερου] να ξενιτευτεί παιδί στην Αίγυπτο. Τα πρώτα του χρόνια τα έζησε και εργάστηκε σε μεγάλους εμπορικούς οίκους της Αλεξάνδρειας, όπου και έμαθε δια ζώσης την εμπορία υλικών οικοδομής. Έμαθε επίσης αγγλικά, γαλλικά και αραβικά. Ο εγγονός του Γιάννης Χρ. Κότσαπας αναφέρει σχετικά: «Από ότι θυμούμαι, ο παππούς μου έφυγε πολύ νωρίς από την Κυπερούντα και το πιθανότερο είναι ότι λόγω οικονομικής καταστάσεως της οικογένειας του και το ότι υπήρχαν πολλά παιδιά να ανατραφούν, κάποιος ευκατάστατος συγγενής που ζούσε στην Αλεξάνδρεια [προφανώς ο Χαραλαμπής Κουτσολεύτερου Γιακουμή (1855)] πρόσεξε την ευστροφία και γρηγοράδα του μυαλού του καθώς και την έφεση του στα γράμματα και ζήτησε από τους γονείς του να τους τον εμπιστευθούν και να τον πάρει μαζί του στην Αίγυπτο. [ Ήταν λίγο αργότερα που και ο συγγενής του Μιχάλης Μιχαηλίδης-Πίκολος ξενιτεύτηκε στην Αίγυπτο, προφανώς στον ίδιο συγγενή]. Ήταν σύνηθες φαινόμενο πλούσιοι συγγενείς που πέτυχαν σε διάφορες χώρες του εξωτερικού πχ Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, Αφρική, Αυστραλία κλπ να παίρνουν συγγενικά τους παιδιά, ιδίως όταν οι ίδιοι δεν είχαν δικά τους παιδιά. Ένα παράδειγμα εκ των πολλών που γνωρίζω ήταν και ο φίλος και κουμπάρος των γονιών μου ο Αναστάσιος Λεβέντης που πήρε τους συγγενείς του στη τότε Χρυσή Ακτή κ.τ.λ.. Ο παππούς μου λοιπόν πήγε σε πολύ μικρή ηλικία μαζί με αυτόν τον συγγενή, ο οποίος τον έβαλε στο Δημοτικό (υποθέτω) σχολείο και μετά σε Γυμνάσιο, όπου διέπρεψε και εργαζόταν ταυτοχρόνως στην περίφημη Εταιρεία ‘XΩΡΕΜΗ – ΜΠΕΝΑΚΗ’, της οποίας η έδρα ήταν μεν η Αλεξάνδρεια αλλά είχε παραρτήματα σε όλη την Ευρώπη και Αμερική. Ήταν μια διεθνής εταιρεία με μεγάλο κύκλο εργασιών από το βαμβάκι μέχρι είδη οικοδομής και ιδίως ξυλεία, την οποίαν έφερναν κυρίως από την Ρουμανία, όπου πολλές φορές εστέλλετο ο Γιάννης για να επιθεωρήσει και αγοράσει ξυλεία. Από νωρίς λοιπόν οι προϊστάμενοι του εκτίμησαν την εντιμότητα και το δαιμόνιο που είχε στο επιχειρείν. Σύντομα επέστρεψε στην Κύπρο, στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, όπου δειλά-δειλά ξεκίνησε να εφαρμόζει όλα και ότι έμαθε στην Αίγυπτο. Οι γνωριμίες που δημιούργησε με τους προμηθευτές ξυλείας στην Ρουμανία τον βοήθησαν πολύ. Έτσι άρχισε τις πρώτες μικρές αγορές ξυλείας και σιγά σιγά αύξανε τον κύκλο των εργασιών του για να γίνει ο μεγαλύτερος ξυλέμπορος της Κύπρου περί το 1915 και μετά. Ίδρυσε αποθήκες σε όλη την Κύπρο πρόσθεσε και άλλα υλικά, όπως σίδηρο και τσιμέντο. Οι δύο Παγκόσμιοι πόλεμοι ευνόησαν τον Γιάννη, γιατί η Κύπρος δεν έτυχε προς καλή της τύχη να εμπλακεί στον πόλεμο, αντιθέτως δε έγινε κέντρο μεταφορών εφοδίων πολεμικού υλικού αλλά και υλικών οικοδομής για οχυρωματικά έργα κλπ. Ο Γιάννης είχε πάντοτε την διορατικότητα να βλέπει τα σημεία των καιρών και έτσι φρόντιζε πάντα να έχει γεμάτες τις αποθήκες του με υλικά». Υπήρξε πρωτοπόρος στον τομέα δραστηριότητας του και σύντομα έγινε ένας από τους επιφανέστερους Κύπριους εμπορευόμενους. Το όνομα Κότσαπας έγινε συνώνυμο με τον επιτυχημένο αυτοδημιούργητο επιχειρηματία και χρησιμοποιήθηκε σκωπτικά σε μερικές άλλες περιπτώσεις (Περιστερώνα, Λάπηθος, Κοντεμένος) για χαρακτηρισμό ατόμων με εμπορικό πνεύμα. Περί το 1910 νυμφεύτηκε την Ιωάννα Νικόλα και Ευανθίας Τομάζου (1889-1964) με καταγωγή τα Μανδριά Λεμεσού και απέκτησαν 10 παιδιά [Ευανθία (1911-2003), Χριστόδουλος (1912-1999), Μιχάλης (1914-1971), Νίκος (1915-1982), Βενιζέλος (1917-1994), Λεύκιος (1919-1944), Ρένος (1921-1932), Φοίβος (1924-2013), Ευγένιος (1926-2005)και Φωτεινή(1931-2011)]. Τις εργασίες του συνέχισαν κατά πρώτον οι γιοί του Χριστόδουλος (1912-1999) και Μιχάλης, οι οποίοι υπήρξαν αντάξιοι συνεχιστές του έργου του και μεγάλωσαν την εταιρεία δημιουργώντας υποκαταστήματα σε όλες τις πόλεις της Κύπρου. Από τα άλλα παιδιά του Γιάννη Χρ. Κότσαπα δυο πέθαναν νέα (Ρένος, Λεύκιος) και μερικά διέπρεψαν σε άλλους τομείς, όπως π.χ. ο Φοίβος που έγινε εκπαιδευτικός και πανεπιστημιακός καθηγητής και ο Βενιζέλος που ακολούθησε διπλωματική καριέρα, υπηρετώντας μεταξύ άλλων ως πρέσβης της Κύπρου στη Μόσχα, Αθήνα και Κάιρο.
