Ο Ιωάννης Σταυριανός ήταν ευκατάστατος έμπορος από τη Λόφου της επαρχίας Λεμεσού. Γεννημένος το 1804 έμαθε τα πρώτα γράμματα στη Λεμεσό και στη συνέχεια ως ιδιοκτήτης εμπορικού πλοίου ανέπτυξε πλούσια εμπορική δραστηριότητα με την Αίγυπτο. Παραμονές της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης μυήθηκε στην Αλεξάνδρεια στη Φιλική Εταιρεία. Με την έναρξη του αγώνα του 1821 στην Πελοπόννησο, έπλευσε στην Ελλάδα επικεφαλής ομάδας Κυπρίων Αγωνιστών[i], την οποία χρηματοδότησε ο ίδιος. Το 1825, επειδή εξαντλήθηκαν τα οικονομικά του, κατατάχτηκε μαζί με τους συντρόφους του στο στρατόπεδο του τακτικού στρατού. Η σημαντική για την εποχή μόρφωσή του συνέτεινε στην ανέλιξή του από υπαξιωματικό σε αξιωματικό. Έλαβε μέρος σ’ όλες τις μάχες που έγιναν γύρω από την Αθήνα του 1826-27 με αρχηγό τον Καραϊσκάκη.[ii] Συνελήφθη αιχμάλωτος κατά τη διάρκεια των συγκρούσεων και τον διέσωσε από την εκτέλεση ο αρχηγός της έφιππης σωματοφυλακής του Κιουταχή Χουσέιν Ντούλλας, που άγνωστο πότε τον άφησε ελεύθερο. Μετά την απελευθέρωση εγκαταστάθηκε στην Αθήνα και σταδιοδρόμησε στις τάξεις της Ελληνικής Χωροφυλακής. Το 1862 υπηρετώντας στην Αργολίδα πρωτοστάτησε στη Ναυπλιακή Επανάσταση, που υπήρξε η απαρχή της έξωσης του Όθωνα. Συνυπογράφει με τους Σωματάρχες της φρουράς της Ναυπλίας Έκθεση Προς τους εξοχώτατους Κυρίους Πρέσβεις των τριών Μεγάλων Ευεργετίδων της Ελλάδος Δυνάμεων Αγγλίας, Γαλλίας και Ρωσίας, όπου για να αποφευχθούν ενδεχόμενες παρεξηγήσεις και προσπάθειες δυσφήμησης δηλώνεται ο σκοπός της Επανάστασης και οι αιτίες που την προκάλεσαν. Η Έκθεση παραδόθηκε στους προξενικούς πράκτορες της Γαλλίας και της Αυστρίας στο Ναύπλιο. Την έκθεση αυτή εκτός από τους Σωματάρχες της φρουράς και τον αρχηγό των στρατιωτικών δυνάμεων Ναυπλίας Αρτέμη Μίχου υπογράφουν επίσης Η επί της ασφαλείας επιτροπή και το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο Ναυπλιέων. Ο Σταυριανός στέλνει επίσης μία επιστολή στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου 1862 απ’ το Ναύπλιο προς τον αντισυνταγματάρχη, επιθεωρητή της Χωροφυλακής Δ. Κουτσογιαννόπουλο, στην οποία περιγράφει τη μάχη στην Άρια. Η επιστολή δημοσιεύτηκε στο υπ’ άρ. 6 φύλλο της εφημερίδας Συνταγματικός Έλλην στις 13 Φεβρουαρίου 1862. Η συμμετοχή του Σταυριανού στη Ναυπλιακή Επανάσταση είχε σαν αποτέλεσμα να τεθεί σε αργία δι’ ασυμβίβαστον προς το επάγγελμα του αξιωμα­τικού διαγωγήν μαζί με άλλους 17 πρωτεργάτες του κινήματος (Φ.Ε.Κ αρ. 27/18-5-1862) . Με το ίδιο διάταγμα ορίστηκε η Αίγινα σαν τόπος διαμονής των περισσότερων από τους αξιωματικούς αυτούς. Από τον τύπο της εποχής μαθαίνουμε τη συμπάθεια και τη θέρμη με τις οποίες υποδέχτηκε ο λαός της Αίγινας τους εκτοπισμένους αξιωματικούς και ιδιαίτερα το Σταυριανό: Των πάντων δε την συμπάθειαν συνεκίνησεν ο αντιμοίραρχος Σταυριανός, φέρων μεθ’ εαυτού κόρην δεκαεπταετή, παραλυτικήν συγκινούσαν δια την θέσιν της και τούς λίθους αυτούς (Εφημερίδα Αιών. αρ. φύλ. 2033 της 20ής Μαΐου 1862). Στο ίδιο φύλλο του Αιώνος δημοσιεύεται μια έντονη διαμαρτυρία των εκτοπισμένων αξιωματικών της φρουράς της Ναυπλίας από την Αίγινα με ημερομηνία 16 Μαΐου 1862 σχετικά με μία πράξιν, που συντάχτηκε από μερικούς αξιωματικούς του ελληνικού στρατού δι’ ης απεκάλεσαν παραβάτας των όρων της στρα­τιωτικής τιμής, όλους τους κατά την Ναυπλιακήν επανάστασιν ευρεθέντας συνα­δέλφους των, παρά την αμνηστία που είχε δοθεί. Στην πράξη αυτή ο τύπος είχε δώσει ευρύτατη δημοσιότητα τον προηγούμενο Απρίλιο. Παρόμοια διαμαρτυρία των εκτοπισμένων στη Σκόπελο και στη Σκιάθο είχε δημοσιευτεί λίγο νωρίτερα, στις 13 Μαΐου 1862. Το θέμα έλαβε μεγάλη έκταση από τον ευνοϊκά διατεθειμένο προς τους εκτοπισμένους τύπο τόσο στην Αθήνα όσο και στην επαρχία (Βλ. εφημερίδες Αθηνά, αρ. φύλ. 3054, 23 Μαΐου 1862 και 3056, 30 Μαΐου 1862, Φως, 19 και 23 Μαΐου 1862, η Φωνή του Λαού. στη Λαμία κ.τ.λ.). Σε λιγότερο από ένα μήνα μετά την έξωση του Όθωνα οι διωχθέντες αξιωματικοί επανήλθαν στην ενεργό υπηρεσία, αλλά ο Σταυριανός δεν περιλαμβάνεται σ’ αυτούς. Φαίνεται πως μόνος του προτίμησε την αποστρατεία, ήταν ήδη άλλωστε 59 ετών. Το Μάιο του επόμενου χρόνου η Προσωρινή Κυβέρνηση απένειμε στον απόστρατο αντιμοίραρχο Ιωάννη Σταυριανό το βαθμό του ταγματάρχη και την αντίστοιχη σύνταξη.
