Σάββα Φωτογραφίες: Ανδρέας Λουκάς Τα Λεύκαρα είναι η πατρίδα του κυπριακού παραδοσιακού κεντήματος, του ονομαστού «λευκαρίτικου», που η φήμη του ξέφυγε από τα όρια της Κύπρου και έγινε γνωστό στις πιο πολλές χώρες της Ευρώπης και όχι μόνο. Στη χειροτεχνία αυτή του κεντήματος και στο εμπόριό του, που άρχισε από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα και έφθασε στην ακμή του στις πρώτες δεκαετίες του 20ου αιώνα, οφείλουν τα Λεύκαρα τον πλούτο και την ευημερία που πάντοτε τα διέκριναν. Η ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΤΙΜΙΟΥ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΥ ΣΤΑ ΛΕΥΚΑΡΑ 1 �Η μεγαλόπρεπη Εκκλησία των Λευκάρων είναι αφιερωμένη στον Τίμιο Σταυρό και ανάγεται στο 14ο αιώνα. Συγκεκριμένα, από τοιχογραφίες που σώζονται πίσω από το τέμπλο του ναού, ο βυζαντινολόγος Αθανάσιος Παπαγεωργίου χρονολογεί το ανατολικό τμήμα της Εκκλησίας στο 14ο αιώνα. Η χρονολογία αυτή επιβεβαιώνεται και από την έμμετρη «επιγραφή του Ολβιανού» που υπάρχει στο κάτω μέρος του Χρυσού Σταυρού των Λευκάρων.Υπάρχει γραπτή μαρτυρία ότι ο Ολβιανός ήταν Επίσκοπος Λευκάρων στα 1307, τον καιρό της Φραγκοκρατίας. Περαιτέρω επιβεβαίωση, με τρόπο αναμφισβήτητο, του γεγονότος αυτού γίνεται από το κτητορικό σημείωμα ενός χειρογράφου του 14ου αιώνα, που υπάρχει στο θησαυροφυλάκιο της Εκκλησίας. Στο τέλος του χειρογράφου αυτού, που είναι ένα πολύτιμο Ευαγγελιστάριο, αναγράφεται ότι γράφτηκε το 1345/46 μέ έξοδα του μοναχού Γαβριήλ, που ήταν ο Ηγούμενος και κτήτορας της μονής του «Τιμίου και ζωοποιού Σταυρού του Φανερωμένου». Το 1740 ο ναός ανακαινίσθηκε και είναι τότε που φιλοτεχνήθηκε και το ξυλόγλυπτο εικονοστάσι από τον Ρόδιο γλύπτη Χατζηκυριάκο που μετακλήθηκε για τούτο από τον Επίτροπο Λουρέντζο. Μια επιγραφή που βρίσκεται στη βάση της εικόνας της Αποκαθήλωσης του Χριστού μαρτυρεί ότι το έτος 1761 έγινε η επιχρύσωση του τέμπλου και στην τελετή για το γεγονός αυτό παρευρέθη και ο τότε Επίσκοπος Κιτίου Μακάριος. 2 �Το έτος 1857 οικοδομήθηκε και το μεγαλόπρεπο καμπαναριό της Εκκλησίας, οι καμπάνες του οποίου δωρήθηκαν από ευσεβείς Λευκαρίτες του εξωτερικού. Σημαντικά έργα στην Εκκλησία έγιναν το έτος 1867, οπότε αυτή επεκτάθηκε για να χωρεί περισσότερο εκκλησίασμα. Το 1909 χρειάστηκε γενική επισκευή του Ναού και τότε ανεγέρθησαν και τα προπύλαια, όπως είναι σήμερα. Έγινε επίσης η θύρα του νότου. Το 1953 έγινε η εικονογράφηση του θόλου. Ο Ναός στο ανατολικό του τμήμα έχει ρυθμό σταυροειδή με τρούλλο, ενώ το νεότερό του τμήμα είναι κυπριακού ρυθμού του 19ου αιώνα. Εσωτερικά έχει έξη κίονες, ανά τρεις σε δυο σειρές. 3 �ου H αποκαθήλωση του Χριστού. Φορητή εικόνα εξαιρετικής τέχνης του 18 αιώνα. ξ Ο ασημένιος Σταυρός Στο εικονοστάσι υπάρχει μια αθέατη εσοχή. Είναι η κρύπτη όπου φυλάγεται ο μεγάλος ξύλινος Σταυρός, στον οποίο είναι αφιερωμένος ο ναός. Στο κέντρο του Σταυρού υπάρχει, κατά την παράδοση τεμάχιο από τον Σταυρό του Κυρίου. Ολόκληρος ο Σταυρός είναι καλυμμένος από λεπτά φύλλα ασημιού. Ο Σταυρός στην μπροστινή κύρια όψη του φέρει 14 ανάγλυφες παραστάσεις από τη ζωή του Κυρίου, αγγέλους και τους ισαπόστολους Κωνσταντίνο και Ελένη. Στο κέντρο δεσπόζει η παράσταση της Σταύρωσης, η οποία καλύπτεται από δυο θυρίδες στις οποίες παριστάνονται η 4 �Θεοτόκος και ο Ιωάννης. Η παράσταση αυτή περιστοιχίζεται από τέσσερις αγγέλους. Στο οριζόντιο τμήμα του Σταυρού απεικονίζονται κατά σειρά ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος, η «προδοσία», ο «Γολγοθάς» και η Αγία Ελένη. Στο κάθετο τμήμα του Σταυρού από πάνω προς τα κάτω απεικονίζονται διαδοχικά ο «Θρόνος της Ετοιμασίας» και η «Ανάσταση του Χριστού» καθώς και οι παραστάσεις της «Αποκαθήλωσης» και του «Ενταφιασμού». Στο κατώτερο άκρο είναι η εικόνα του Ολβιανού με τη σχετική έμμετρη επιγραφή. Κατά την παράδοση στο εσωτερικό του Σταυρού υπάρχει τεμάχιον του Τιμίου και Ζωοποιού Σταυρού του Κυρίου. 5 �Περιγραφή του Τιμίου Σταυρού από το Βασίλειο Γρηγόροβιτς Βάρσκυ το 1734 Ο Ρωσσικής καταγωγής μοναχός Βασίλειος Γρηγόροβιτς Βάρσκυ, άρχισε περιοδεία στα 1725 με την επιθυμία να επισκεφθεί τους Αγίους Τόπους και να δει και να γνωρίσει τον κόσμο, τα ήθη και τα έθιμά του. Στα 1734 έρχεται από την Τρίπολη της Λιβύης στη Κύπρο για να βρεί πλοίο για την Ευρώπη. Κατά την διαμονή του στην Κύπρο επισκέπετεται τη μονή του Αγίου Μηνά για να προσκυνήσει και με την ευκαιρία αυτή έρχεται και στα Λεύκαρα. Γράφει ο ίδιος: ¨ Όταν επήγα στη μονήν, επέρασα από το χωρίον Λεύκαρα, το οποίον σημαίνει το λευκόν, εκ της λευκής γης. Κατοικείται μόνον υπό χριστιανών και δεν έχει μουσουλμάνους. Παρέμεινα εκεί ως φιλοξενούμενος ενός χριστιανού, μιαν ημέραν και μίαν νύκτα. Υπάρχουν δύο ωραίοι ναοί μετά τρούλλων. Ο κύριος ναός , ο μεγαλύτερος και ωραιότερος, είναι ωκοδομημένος εις τιμήν και ανάμνησιν του Τιμίου και Ζωοποιού Σταυρού του Κυρίου. Κατέχει ένα ανεκτίμητον θησαυρόν, ήτοι ένα μεγάλον τεμάχιον του Ζωοποιού Σταυρού, δώρον της αγίας Ελένης, όταν επέστρεφεν αύτη από τα Ιεροσόλυμα, μετά την ανακάλυψιν του Σταυρού του Κυρίου. Βεβαιούται ότι τούτο είναι μέρος της βάσεως επί της οποίας εκαρφώθησαν οι αγνοί πόδες του Κυρίου Ημών Ιησού Χριστού και απεκόπη ως έναν ωραίον πινακίδιον, διαστάσεων ογδόου μέρους χάρτου folio. Έχει δυο μικράς οπάς εκ της διατρήσεως των καρφίων, ότε εσταυρώθη ο Χριστός. Η σανίς φαίνεται πολύ πεπαλαιωμένη και έχει μιαν ωραίαν οσμήν. Εγώ ο ανάξιος την επροσκύνησα δια των αμαρτωλών μου χειλέων. Το Τίμιον τούτο Ξύλον είναι καρφωμένος εις ένα μεγάλο Σταυρόν, κεκελυμμένον δι΄αργύρου- μόνον το Τίμιον Ξύλον δεν είνα κεκαλυμμένον δια την προσκύνησιν. Ο Σταυρός ίσταται πάντοτε εντός του ναού.¨ Η Βάπτιση του Σταυρού στην Πηήν Ένα έθιμο που διατηρείται ως τις μέρες μας είναι η βάπτιση του Τιμίου Σταυρού στην Πηήν, που γίνεται ανήμερα των Θεοφανείων όταν ο καιρός είναι καλός. Το εκκλησίασμα των Χριστιανών με προπορευόμενον τον ιερέα, ο οποίος κρατεί τον Σταυρόν στον ώμο του, τους ιεροψάλτες και τα εξαπτέρυγα κατηφορίζουν και φθάνουν στην Πηήν. Στην κατάλληλη πέτρινη εξέδρα που υπάρχει ανεβαίνουν το ιερατείον, οι ιεροψάλτες, τα εξαπτέρυγα και άλλα λάβαρα της εκκλησίας και η κολυμβήθρα με το νερό. Τότε αρχίζει η τελετή του αγιασμού των υδάτων. Οι χωριανοί και άλλοι επισκέπτες στέκουν στον αμφιθεατρικό χώρο που περιβάλλει την πλατεία της Πηής και παρακολουθούν με κατανυξη την λειτουργία. Με το άκουσμα του τροπαρίου ¨Εν Ιορδάνη βαπτιζομένου σου Κύριε.....¨ συμμετέχουν όλοι στη ψαλμωδία και στη συνέχεια αρκετοί προσέρχονται στη εξέδρα και δροσίζονται με το αγιασμένο νερό και παίρνουν ακόμα σε μικρα δοχεία για να ραντίσουν στο σπίτι τους. 6 �Η Συμβολή της Εκκλησίας του Τιμίου Σταυρού στην Παιδεία Είναι γνωστό πώς η Εκκλησία στη Κύπρο διαδραμάτισε ηγετικό ρόλο σε όλες τις πτυχές του βίου των Κυπρίων. Στη παιδεία έδωσε πολλά, ίδρυσε σχολεία, εκπαίδευσε ιερείς, πρωτοστάτησε στην πνευματική προκοπή του νησιού, κράτησε τις παραδόσεις και την εθνική ταυτότητα των Κυπρίων. Έτσι και στα Λέυκαρα η Εκκλησία του Τιμίου Σταυρού ακολουθώντας τα χνάρια αυτά συνέβαλε εξαιρετικά στη δημιουργία σχολείων και στη συντήρησή τους. Στα 1851 διαβάζουμε στον Κώντυκα της εκκλησίας: ¨επιτροπεύοντος και επιστατούντος του Μιχαήλ Τιγγίρη οικοδομήθη το σχολείον το αλληλοδιδακτικόν των Άνω Λευκάρων με τα έξοδα της Εκκλησίας του Τιμίου Σταυρού και εκόστισεν 5000 γρόσια ήτοι 50 οθωμανικές λίρες¨. Στα 1920 η Εκλλησία ανέλαβε εξ ολοκλήρου τη δαπάνη για την ανέγερση του νέου Δημοτικού Σχολείου που ξεπέρασε τις 4000 λίρες. Το σχολείο κτίστηκε σε οικόπεδο που διέθεσε για τον σκοπό αυτό η Εκκλησία. Όταν στα 1929 φτάνει στα Λεύκαρα αποστολή της «ΕΝΩΣΗΣ ΛΕΥΚΑΡΙΤΩΝ ΑΜΕΡΙΚΗΣ» με σκοπό την ίδρυση Ανωτέρας Σχολής που θα συνέβαλλε στη θρησκευτική και εκπαιδευτική ανάπτυξη της νεολαίας των Λευκάρων, η Εκκλησία ανταποκρίνεται αμέσως παραχωρώντας οικόπεδο για την ίδρυση της Σχολής με δαπάνη της «ΕΝΩΣΗΣ ΛΕΥΚΑΡΙΤΩΝ ΑΜΕΡΙΚΗΣ». Η πρώτη φάση του κτηρίου τελειώνει το 1930 και η Σχολή δωρίζεται στην Εκκλησία. Το κτήριο συμπληρώνεται μετά τον πόλεμο και εξελίσσεται με την ανακήρυξη της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας σε εξατάξιο Γυμνάσιο που γαλουχεί καο μορφώνει τη νεολαία των Λευκάρων αλλά και των γύρω χωριών της ορεινής Λάρνακος. 7 � Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
