But some evidence show that existing stone buildings in the core of the former village have been built in late 19th century. There are also pictures taken between 1892 and 1895. The village is built amphitheatrically on sloping ground, facing the sea. The houses are built with local stone (called matsangana) in the traditional way most of which without any rendering, some of them are long and narrow with rooms in series (makrinaria). Complexes are also presented in Figure 'Π' or even 'Γ'. Most houses are two storey with the second floor build as a separate house for the daughter of the family. Most poor houses consisted of one room on the ground floor and a room on the upper floor, which is usually connected with an external stone staircase and a balcony on the first floor. Τα περισσότερα σπίτια είναι μακρόστενα με δωμάτια σε σειρά (μακρινάρια). Παρουσιάζονται επίσης συμπλέγματα σε σχήμα «Γ» ή ακόμη και «Π». Η πρώτη εντύπωση που προσλαμβάνει ο επισκέπτης του Αγίου Αθανασίου είναι η γενική σχεδόν χρήση της πέτρας, τουλάχιστον όπως παρατηρείται σήμερα, κυρίως ανεπίχριστης, σε στενόμακρους κυρίως όγκους, αν και σε ορισμένα παλαιά κτίσματα διακρίνεται επίχρισμα, σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις. Η κατασκευή των τοίχων (λιθοδομή) γινόταν από τις ντόπιες πέτρες των λατομείων της περιοχής, που σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις παρουσιάζονταν σε διάφορα μεγέθη και επεξεργασία. Τα περισσότερα σπίτια στο χωριό είναι διώροφα και αυτά προκύπτουν γιατί έκτιζαν τον δεύτερο όροφο για ξεχωριστή κατοικία για να μένουν οι θυγατέρες τους.
