In ancient times there was a perception that the Moon revolved around the Earth in a circular orbit. We now know that the Moon's orbit around the Earth is elliptical (figure 1). When the Moon is near its Apogee it moves slower, while when it is near its Perigee it moves faster. This is due to the gravitational force exerted by the Earth on the Moon, where the closer it is to the Earth, the greater the gravitational force exerted on it by the Earth.
