On the left-hand side of the photograph the great-grandmother of Astero, Elisavet, is depicted, while in the centre is her grandmother, Eleni and on the right-hand side is Paraskevou. Paraskevou's husband, Nikolas, worked as a forester at the Department of Forests. Nikolas studied in Beirut, Lebanon, a fact that till today his descendent, Niki Shiakalli mentions. During those times, only a few people had the chance to study abroad. The pictured women come form Niki's Shiakali family (Astero's mother). Όταν γυρίζει τον χρόνο πίσω θυμάται: "Για τα καλλιστεία έραψα στην ράφταινα μου ένα μακρύ φόρεμα μέχρι το γόνατο. Η δε κομμώτρια μου, μου κτένισε τα μαλλιά και τα έκανε μπούκλες σ' ένα ψηλό κότσο" γιατί έτσι ήταν της μόδας τότε. "Όταν βγήκαμε όλες οι υποψήφιες, είδα όλο αυτό τον κόσμο στο στάδιο - στην Λευκωσία - ο οποίος φώναζε το δικό μου νούμερο". Είναι πολύ περήφανη μέχρι σήμερα, που κέρδισε επάξια σ' αυτό τον διαγωνισμό. ΄Οσοι την γνώρισαν έχουν να θυμούνται μέχρι σήμερα πόσο όμορφη ήταν. ΄Οταν έγινε η Τουρκική εισβολή- 45 χρόνια μετά- η κόρη της Αστέρω είδε μια γνωστή της Βαρωσιώτισσα η οποία μεταξύ άλλων της είπε: "Θυμάμαι την μάμμα σου στο Βαρώσι. "Ήταν πολλά όμορφη!" Η Νίκη Σιακαλλή δεν βασίστηκε μόνο στην ομορφιά της. Φρόντισε να αποκτήσει γνώσεις και ικανότητες. Παρακολούθησε μαθήματα της γαλλικής γλώσσας και ραπτικής. Τότε οι κοπέλες έπρεπε να μάθουν να ράβουν, να πλέκουν, να κεντούν και να κρατούν το νοικοκυριό τους. Επίσης σπούδασε ζωγραφική σε σχολή στην Γαλλία και έκανε μαθήματα ακορντεόν σε δάσκαλο μουσικής στην Αμμόχωστο, τον κ. Ζυμπουλάκη. Eπίσης γνώριζε όλους τους ξένους χορούς της εποχής της αλλά και τους Κυπριακούς χορούς. Σε όποια εκδήλωση παρευρισκόταν όταν έβγαινε να χορέψει έκλεβε τις εντυπώσεις. Είχε και έχει πολύ ωραία φωνή και όταν ήταν νεώτερη και έκανε τις δουλειές στο σπίτι της μητέρας της τραγουδούσε ταυτόχρονα και τότε γνώριζε η γειτονιά ότι <τώρα η Νίκη κάνει τις δουλειές του σπιτιού>!! Η Νίκη Σιακαλλή ήταν και είναι ένας υπέροχος άνθρωπος, γεμάτη ευαισθησίες, ανθρωπιά και καλοσύνη. Αυτά τα προτερήματα φρόντισε να μεταδώσει και στα παιδιά της. Επίσης φρόντισε οι κόρες της να έχουν ήθος και να προχωρούν στην ζωή τους με την αξία τους και να αποκτήσουν όσες γνώσεις και ικανότητες μπορούν. Niki won a beauty contest at the age of 18. She competed with a long dress. She remembers that for the beauty contest the tailor made her a knee-high dress. The hairdresser made her a curly bun as the fashion dictated. When all the contestants got on stage, the crown was shouting her number. She is very proud of this until today and everybody remembers how beautiful she was.
