Ο Εθνικός Άσσιας ιδρύθηκε στις 14 Μαρτίου 1966 και το πρώτο διάστημα από τη δημιουργία του έδινε φιλικές αναμετρήσεις με ομάδες γειτονικών χωριών. Χρώματα του Εθνικού είναι το μπλε και το άσπρο και έμβλημα της ο πυρσός. Η ομάδα αγωνιζόταν σε ιδιόκτητο γήπεδο στην Άσσια έως το 1974. Το 1967 εντάχθηκε στην Εθνική Ποδοσφαιρική Ομοσπονδία Περιφέρειας Λευκωσίας (ΕΠΟΠΛ) στην οποία παρέμεινε έως το 1970 που εντάχθηκε στην Κυπριακή Ομοσπονδία Ποδοσφαίρου (ΚΟΠ). Κατά την περίοδο 1968-69, κατέκτησε το κύπελλο ΕΠΟΠΛ κερδίζοντας στον τελικό τη ΛΑΛΛ Λύσης με 1-0 (ενώ τερμάτισε και στη δεύτερη θέση του ομίλου του στο πρωτάθλημα) και την περίοδο 1969-70 το πρωτάθλημα του ομίλου του (ενώ ήταν και φιναλίστ του κυπέλλου την ίδια περίοδο). Λόγω των καλών πορειών που είχε η ομάδα στις διοργανώσεις της ΕΠΟΠΛ, το διοικητικό συμβούλιο του Εθνικού Άσσιας αποφάσισε να αιτηθεί ένταξη στην ΚΟΠ. Με επιστολή που απέστειλε στις 19 Αυγούστου 1970 στον πρόεδρο της ΚΟΠ η ομάδα ζητούσε την ένταξή της στις τάξεις της ομοσπονδίας. Στις 28 Σεπτεμβρίου 1970 η ΚΟΠ απέστειλε επιστολή στον Εθνικός Άσσιας ενημερώνοντας το σωματείο ότι η Τακτική Γενική Συνέλευση της ομοσπονδίας ενέκρινε την ένταξη του σωματείου στη Γ΄ κατηγορία. Η τραγικότερη ημέρα στην ιστορία του σωματείου καταγράφεται το καλοκαίρι του 1974, με την κατάληψη της Άσσιας από τα τουρκικά στρατεύματα μετά την Τουρκική εισβολή στην Κύπρο, γεγονός που κατέστησε το σωματείο προσφυγικό. Ο εκτοπισμός δημιούργησε πολλά προβλήματα στην ομάδα που βρέθηκε χωρίς έδρα και χωρίς αθλητικό υλικό, το οποίο, όμως, οδήγησε στην αναδιοργάνωση και στην συνέχιση στη συμμετοχή της στις διοργανώσεις της ΚΟΠ.
Ethnikos Assia Football Club is a Cypriot football team currently playing in the Cypriot Second Division. The team was established in Assia village, Famagusta, but since the Turkish invasion of 1974, Ethnikos became a refugee team. The club is now based in the capital Nicosia and play their home games at the Makario stadium. The club has played three times in the first division, the last time was during the 2001–02 season.
